what is a good model shotgun?

The key is, as stated by the OP, he wants something that looks "tactical" that can be used for the range and home defense. If by the range you mean breaking clay, I suggest a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 because there are more tactical accessories available for them than other fine shotguns that have been mentioned above. You will want two barrels. One for HD and one that accepts chokes for the range.
If what you really want is a tacticool gun for HD that you can have some fun with at a range, I recommend the Remington 870 Express Tactical that comes with ghost ring sights, a +2 magazine extension, and a 18.5" barrel threaded with a Tactical Choke. Unscrew the breacher choke and it takes standard choke tubes. http://www.remington.com/products/fi...-tactical.aspxComment

I'm also new to the world of shotguns but I find myself drawn to the more modern looking tactical stuff like the Saiga 12 and the KSG. What else is out there in the legal but more over the top looking shotguns? (also for range and home defense)CRPA member

Modern?
Remington 870
Mossberg 500 590 835
Benelli M1/2/3/4
Classic?
Winchester Model 12
Remington 11
I've had a bunch over the years. The 870 is a nice pump action, very strong. I'm now using a Mossberg 835 with 3.5" magnum buck. 18x 00 pellets (PER SHOT!)will ruin anyone's day real quick
I wouldn't feel under armed with any of the above.. and some others too.

A right handed shotgun is better for a lefty. A left handed shotgun is better for a righty. If you want to go off the beaten path a little, how about an Ithaca 37. The action is smooth as glass and it is a bottom ejector (which is great for a lefty). These were the LAPD and LASD issue shotguns for many, many years. I love mine.

You can not go wrong with an 870, I have one for the same reason I have a 10/22 and a Glock....they are proven to be reliable, take a pounding, be put away wet and still function when you need them the most.
It also depends on what you mean by "the range"
I also have a Remington 11-87 that is very enjoyable to shoot, its a little more pricey but is a very nice gun for the money, or at least it was when I bought it, I haven't looked at prices on them lately.
The Benelli's are nice as well, I haven't been in the shotgun market for a while, but I know that I lusted after one once upon a time. If I was going to buy another shotgun I would definitely look hard at the Nova pump. It has had a good track record and is in a similar price range as a good 870Comment

saiga 12's are bad a** but they can be difficult to get right now. id say that a modded out mossberg with a heat shield, pistol grip, collapsing stock ad bayonet would look pretty good. maybe not quite as cool as a converted saiga with a 10 round mag and a quad rail, but still, it would look nice.Comment
