What would someone use to clean the out side of a barrel?

I recently was given my friends somewhat new Mossberg .410 (Sorry I can't remember the model, and I'm not at my house at the moment). This gun is in basically great condition, but when you pull the pump back, it seems that a bit of rust could be forming.

Also, it seems like a speck might be forming on the bottom back side of the barrel. Is there a specific lubricant, wipe, or technique that I should do for this now and if it gets worse?

    Thanks guys.

Gun oil and a rag should suffice.

I use 0000 steel wool. After you get the rust off, gun oil.

I actually "wet" a small piece of the 0000 steel wool with a good oil and apply it lightly and carefully to the affected area, and like johnthomas, when the rust is gone make sure you re-oil the area. Sometimes, I have even touched up the area with some cold blue before oiling it, but make sure you thoroughlt clean the area first before blueing.

I use EEzox Gun Care, I found a good article in the web on gun lubricants and rust protection http://www.thegunzone.com/rust.html. the author made comparisons of the effect of different gun care products on nails exposed to salt water to induce corrosion and the best result he got was with EEzox gun Care

A number of different compounds with some very fine steel wool and going slow will generally get rid of a minor rust problem that is getting started. EEzox will work very, very well.

As noted above, once you have it cleaned keep the area, and the bluing in general, lightly oiled, and you should be good to go. If you do go the cold blue route, thoroughly de-grease the area or you may get less than desirable results.

I've used 0000 steel (or brass) wool to get light rust off a barrel. Just wet it and very gently go over the area. Take your time and wipe it off once in a while to remove any dirt.
