    MOSSBERG (MAVERICK) 88

So Im thinking of buying my first shotgun and was not looking to spend alot of money, so any thoughts on maverick 88. ok for home defense? how reliable? and whats the quality of finish like. turners has them on sale for 199. any reviews would be great.

I'd wait til big 5 has the mossburg 500 combo on sale for 279 or cheaper and buy that. More options for access and get both barrels. (Barrel alone is over 100.00) However if money is an issue the maverick will work and most moss 500 parts will be interchangeable.

No problems with my Maverick 88. Bought it as a truck gun and am very happy with it. Did Duracoat it just make the finish better which cost me all of $20 to do.

It's a good gun, but if you want to buy any other accessories or parts etc. I'd just spend a little more and just get the OG ... Mossy 500

Thanks for the input guys. I had not heard many reviews on the maverick, but it sounds pretty dependable. I did want to add a saddle on it. I guess I can put one on the buttstock. Hey d man did u duracoat yourself or did u take it somewhere?

Ive had my maverick 88 for a couple years now. Only issue ive EVER had was short stroking a few times and thats 100% user error from not pushing the pump all the way forwards.
Oh and if your planning on tacticooling it out, pretty sure the pump itself isnt interchangable like the standard mossberg 500 is. (dont quote me on that tho)

Did it myself. Took a few hours, the prep work is everything. Sanded the barrel and magazine tube with 220 git sandpaper, degreased it 3 different times with brake cleaner and laquer thinner (used 100% cotton clean rags to wipe it down between), then shot it with a Harbor Freight airbrush kit, let it dry overnight, put it back together. Very happy with the end product! Cost me all of $40 including the paint, sandpaper, and brake cleaner.

If you want a lot for the money, the new pump from winchester, the SXP at Big5 is a great go-to gun. Its built a lot better than the competition down there all from china, and it is smooth. I'd take a look at that and maybe wait till it goes down to $249 or something from $329 is what it costs there I believe. Anyway, I'd hold off till you can go 870 exp, SXP, Mossberg 500a

If you're looking at just home defense the Mav 88 will be just fine. I've got one and for a go to it's perfect, and I don't worry about it's cosmetics if I were to drop it or something. It's a work gun.
