    Big 5 Mossberg Shotguns?

What kind of Mossberg shotguns do Big 5 sell? I noticed they sometimes have a sale on them for around under $300, it comes with two barrels, one long and a shorter 'vented' one. I believe it holds up to 8 shells, it's going to be my next firearms purchase and I just want to know if they are any good and what model mossy it is.

    Thank you!

Sounds like the 500 combo to me Big 5 does those alot. It's not a bad deal honestly since you can use the 28" barrel for some trap along with having a sg with an 18 1/2 " for HD. I went with the Hawk 872 from Big 5 for $199 strictly for HD since it just sits in my closet coming out maybe 2 times a year to clean lube and shoot a box thru.

The Mossberg duo barrel package at Big 5 is NOT an 8 shot model. It holds 5 in the magazine plus 1 in the chamber. Some complain that the fore end slide is not the Mossberg slide but an 88 Maverick slide. The long barrel is a 28" vent rib with a FIXED modified choke. (That means it does not use interchangeable choke tubes.) It has a mid rib bead. The short barrel is 18.5". Some complain about the quality of bluing. Overall, I think it is a very good deal, depending on your needs.

Big 5 does sell an 8 shot Mossberg with a 20" barrel, only.

Big 5 has a few Mossberg shotguns to pick from. It really depends on what you're going to use it for. But the $280 Mossberg 500 combo (when on sale) will serve you well. The mag tube has a 5 shell capacity, and it comes with 2 barrels. An 18.5" for home defense, and a 28" vent rib with a fixed modified choke, for trap and the like..

The Mossberg with the 8 shell mag tube capacity is the security version. It comes with only 20" barrel.

The 500 combo kit is a good deal when it goes on sale. I think I've bought 4 of them over the years and never paid more than $200 for one on sale. I know the prices have gone up a bit in the last few years though. You will want to make sure that you get one with screw in chokes. Sometimes Mossberg sends them with fixed chokes and sometimes they send them with screw in chokes. So, check carfully.

BTW, the vented rib is on the longer barrel not the 18 1/2" one.

The "security special" that they run is a Maverick-88.
It's a good gun, but it's not the same as a Mossberg-500. Some 500 accessories will fit, some won't. As mentioned above, the difference is in the fore end.
It's kinda like an "Epiphone" Gibson or a "Geo" Chevy.

I got the 500 from Big 5 for my wife and HD. I didn't want her to be afraid of it so I got the 20 gauge.. When I brought it home she looked at it and asked me why I didn't get the the 12.

The 8-shot security model is a Mossberg 500 Persuader. With the good fore end and synthetic stock. It's actually just a 7+1, 7 in magazine and 1 in chamber.

I was talking about the specials with two barrels for something like $200 or $300. That's the Maverick.

I bought a used one about two years ago from a Calgunner. No problems whatsoever. Not happy with the plastic buttstock and slide, I bought walnut furniture off eBay, reportedly from a standard Mossy 500. The buttstock was fine, fit perfectly. So did the slide but the standard 500 version is about an inch shorter than the Big 5 plastic slide, making more of the tube visible out the front end. Functionally it's fine, no problems cycling or firing it.

From time to time they also have the Mossberg 590's on sale... Don't believe they sell the 590 A1's though... I've had a 500 for 20+ years {from Big 5} & love it... Just recently got a 590 A1... All the A1's have medal trigger guard, metal safety switch & heavy barrel versus plastic guard & switch, & regular barrel... check out there web site; www.mossberg.com ....

500 combo. Best bang for your buck (pun intended).

You are also limited as to what other barrels will fit due to the placement of the barrrel guide ring (lug).
