Saiga 12 Range Report and Questions

Ok the gun is brand new, was hand cycled by me about 600 + times, field stripped and cleaned before firing a single shot. I finally shot it last saturday and shot 50 slugs through it. I also installed a MD V-Plug and had it on setting 2.

The first 30 shots were Federal 2 3/4" slugs. The first 2 shots at the setting resulted in FTE's so I switched it to setting 3. The gun ran perfectly. The last 20 shots were Federal 3" magnums and I left the setting on 3, figuring this would help break the gun in.

The problem that I ran into was on the last five shots. The puck in the gas block became stuck and would not move. The gun became a single shot. Upon cleaning and inspecting the gun, it looked like metal solder was coating the inside of the gas block.

The crud was so thick that I had to pound the puck out with a cleaning rod and a mallet. At first site I thought the threads in the gas block had become stripped and that the crud was the metal shavings. After cleaning and scrubbing the inside of the gas block for an hour I was able to insert the puck and it was moving as it should.

Does this sound normal to foul this bad after 50 slugs? I know I should have had the setting on 1 for the 3" magnums but I only ran 20 of them. I have a 3port gun and all three are clearly visible and not blocked.

i've been told that the best puck is the factory one, that said in my S12 i have the factory puck and i've never had a problem with fireing high brass on setting 1 and low brass on setting 2, if you're having problems with the gun in its original configuration you may want to look into the gas block and see how many ports you have and what sizes the holes are, thats usually the problem with these guns, not always but most of the time.

I have heard you should run the stock plug and only change if it is needed to cycle low brass. with my siaga i ran 50 3" buck, 10 slugs, 140 2 3/4 buck shot and 100 walmart bulk pack bird shot in that order. i have no problems now shooting bird shot with the stock plug. you can also look at the back of the reciever to see if the bolt was beating it up. some siaga where over gassed from the factory

This also happened to mine. Although I don't have the V-plug I shot 60 rnds. 2 3/4" Win. slugs it ran fine but when I got home I couldn't unscrew it. I had to flood the gas tube with CLP and let it sit. When I finally got it unscrewed I found the puck stuck and had to pound it out. Yes, the thread looked stripped and found metal shavings in there.

I thought I bottomed out on the #1 setting and had to back it out one full turn but thats not the case. I sanded and smoothed the puck out because it looked like metal shaving got fused on there. I'm planning to take it out again next week to use different varieties of ammo and see if it'll cycle or have the same problem.

I'm really curious if this is normal and would like to get answers.

          BTW My S12 isn't converted.

Rusty - Is your S12 an Arsenal with Legion marking and etched side?

I've never run that many slugs through mine, but a day shooting clays with low brass walmart target loads gets plenty of crap built up on and around the puck, so I'm not surprised.
