    Hawk 982 with smoother action

    Hello
I recently purchased a Hawk 982 shotgun, it seems to me that the slide action is a little bit rough and I would like to make it smoother action pump, do you know if changing the forend slide tube for a 870 Remington Express one will improve the action?

    Thanks

So you tried to save some $$ and went cheap on the shotgun. Now you want to buy parts for it from the weapon platform you should have bought in the first place.

I found very good reviews on the Hawk 982 and if I can improve it why not? I didn't want to spent too much money in a shotgun

Oil it heavy and pump it like 500 times. Then pull it apart, clean it, lightly oil it, and reassemble. It will get better.

I know a couple of guys with Hawk 982s. Yes they are a Chinese made clone of an 870. Sure I'd rather buy American. But if I am just starting out as a young guy or a college student looking to defend my house spending $199 plus DROS for a 982 versus $329 plus DROS is something of a no brainer.

The Hawk is a robust enough platform to stand up to use. I've not seen one throw a spring out of the trigger group or break a firing pin and I know a couple guys who have them and shoot the crap out of them.

Essentially, give the outside of the mag tube a good lube with a quality gun oil. Rem-Oil works well, but other brands will work as well. Once you have a light coat on let it sit. Give the action bars a very light coating. After a day or so, start cycling the action. Not hard, just cycle it 25 - 50 times. Then, on your next trip past a Wal-Mart, pick up a 100 round pack of game loads. I prefer Remington as they work well in all my guns, Federal next, Winchester Universal is last choice.

Then go out to your favorite shooting place and shoot it. After the session, clean it and lube it again as above. Take it out once in a while to cycle it and shoot it as much as you feel like.

              The gun will get smoother.

NO!, don't do it. This will lessen the quality of your weapon. Your 982 is new and the action is tight as it should be, it will smooth out and only get better with use. If you want to speed up this process you can polish the action bars and the bolt with a dremmel or just shoot the zhit out of it.

Don't forget to tell him how reliable the 870 is AFTER you fix the chamber issue! Oh wait, I meant to say AFTER you "clean the chamber" (with a honing tool).

I didnt use a dremel but I used some 1000 grit sandpaper and go slowly. I use the water sanding technique just like on a car.

You have me confused with some one else, I am not a 870 guy.

Buying these China made clones is like buying tools from Harbor Freight. Sure they will work the first few times, but they will inevitably fail you.

That action is not getting any smoother while sitting in your closet. Shoot it.
All new shotguns are stiff, doesn't matter if it's made Beijing or Bakersfield.
