What's the difference in the 870 express vs 870P?

Is there a structural difference between the 870 express tactical and the 870 Police shotguns. Or is it just what's attached, like the metal trigger assembly. Is the core of the 870 the same regardless of the model?

There's a list of differences between the two, hence the $300-400 price difference. Different coating on exterior parts, metal internal parts (as oppose to plastic on the express), stiffer spring, shorter foreend, etc. It depends on what you're using the gun for. The police magnum is beefier for 00 buck and slug rounds. If you're shooting primarily bird shot for skeet and home defense then the express will suffice.

Bird shot for home defense? No.

That's why I have multiple shotguns. Mossberg 500 loaded with 00buck, 870 loaded with slugs and my 20gauge loaded with bird shot.

              Sorry about the late response!

I did have some trouble with some resurrecting pigeons during the rapture last month, and the 870 performed wonderfully with the bird-shot!

Thank for the info on the differences!

If you stagger the shells in the mag and the zombie Quail turn up first your never gonna hit them with buckshot and slugs.

Maybe birdshot should be first (well last in the mag, so it's first) well you get the idea.

Good grief, why isn't there a Sticky for these FAQs in the shotgun section?

Listen to JD from AIPPI for 870 info.

And if you're lucky you'll get one like this, with the beautiful blued finish, and walnut furniture:

Correct, they are the same weapon built with the same parts except a couple small ones. The only difference is the finish, the stocks and two small parts. The Express has a polymer trigger plate assembly the Police and Wingmaster still use the old cast metal.

Every other part is the same in every 870 and there are no plastic parts or beefer parts as stated in another post by someone.

There is only one 870 and the reason other models cost more is you are paying for high end stocks and finishes, not parts as these are all the same. Anyone not understanding this simply go to www.remington.com and click on Support, when that page comes up click on parts, and then down load the parts list. for 12ga you will find only one left shell latch, one right, one hammer, one hammer spring, one hammer plunger, one disconect and so on and so on. Oh, did I mention they are all built with the same parts. So where are these other parts if not on the parts list and why are they not manufactured by Remington? Because they don't exsist except on these gun blogs by people that don't know the subject and give wrong information.

It is this simple. The Police and Wingmaster have a steel extractor and the Express a MIM extractor. The police has one small spring different then the Express or Wingmaster and that is it. All other parts are the same except for the trigger plate assembly I mentioned.

Look at the parts list and see the 18.5" Express matte finish bead sight barrel cost $134 yet the 18.5" parkerized police bead sight barrel cost $101. Yep, the Express barrel cost $33 more then the police barrel. The Police receiver is $247 and the Express receiver is $247. The Express breech bolt is $97 and the police breech bolt is $97.

Learning the parts list is the best way to understand these weapons and to avoid making incorrect comments when the subject comes up. Simply repeating something else you read on another blog is not answering the OP's questions if it is wrong.

Skid mark - that is not the answer as that same mess gets pasted by someone every time the question comes up. That list is outdate and no longer relevent. It is also a lot of Marketing BS refering someone to that is not giving them a correct answer in anyway shape of form.

Its not so much that all the parts are different, its the detail put into each part that differs. If I've done my research correctly the 870P internals have been worked quite a bit more than the Express model internals. While being the same raw parts in the beginning they are noticeably different in the finished assembly. That on top of different finishes and a different stock/forend are why the price is higher.

I have done no research. I simply have seen thousands of the Express and P receivers and parts and see no difference. In 2009 I ordered over 80K dollars in parts from from Remington and 68K in 2010. So I believe this makes me an authority on parts for the 870. So one more time for guys that just don't get it or will not down load the parts list and see for themself. Every 870 is made with the same parts, period (except as explained in my prior post). They don't do anything different to the part or there would be designations on the part list. I tell you guys, give you the parts list to prove it and yet you come up with stuff to dispute the truth. You have nothing to validate what you are saying except opion, marketing or something you read on another site. So, he who has ears let him hear.

Is Remington still assembling the 870P's on the separate, secured, production line? If yes, then IMO that's the only other real difference aside from the parkerized finish, trigger guard, extractor and one spring as noted in aippi's post above.

I own 870s including a P model and they are all, at their core, the exact same gun. The major differences between models are almost entirely cosmetic.
