    Barrel blew off Rem 870

A guy claims the barrel of a nearly new 870 Express blew off after shooting a few slugs on day 2 of owning it. Day 1 he ran a single box of buck through it. He says he tightened down the magazine cap. Is this BS?

Honestly I believe it could happen if the magazine cap was very loose or not even on the gun. If it was tightened I do not see how it would happen unless the threads were stripped from the factory and were non functioning. Even with no magazine cap I would not assume the barrel would "blow off" I would assume it would more or less fall off. This is all an assumption on my part and I could be completely wrong but it seems a bit far fetched that a barrel would just "blow off."

I bet he also works at the Big 5 gun counter.

Big 5 is great on price if you know just what you want and what they are selling you, but for $10 or $20 I would rather patronize a gun shop. Actually, Bass Pro sometimes beats Big 5 on price if there is one nearby.

There is one nearby with a remington 870 with a factory extended mag on it. The barrel clamp is adjusted completely wrong and I pointed it out to the store manager. His response was that he knows but isn't about to move it to where the screw fits in a groove on the extension since he doesn't want to scratch the fininsh. He will let the buyer do that. Jerk.

There was another thread that somebody bought an 870 from Big 5 and the counter guy said not to shoot slugs with it. I was making the joke about why.

Yes, BS. Like Bay Area Shooter said, the barrel would fall off. Or he would notice it loose if the mag cap was loose. Also, once the barrel is loose to a certain point the head space changes and there is a "No GO" situation so the fireing pin would not strike the primer hard enough to ignite it.

I have been waiting to hear from you and now believe this is an urban legend. Perhaps he was loaded higher than his 870.

It happened with a .50 cal machine gun.

I once sent an 870 barrel downrange - this was after I had shot over 2000 rounds in a couple of days while in the marines.

you just fall back on your level of training.
