    New Saiga 12, some questions.

Just got my SAIGA 12, right now it is basic although I did change it over to a pistol grip configuration and future modifications will come as budget permits.

    First question.

The STOCK 5 round magazine does not hold the bolt open after the last shot.

I will want to get some after market higher capacity magazines for this gun.

Do any of the aftermarket magazines hold the bolt open after last shot and what is their capacities.

Anyone have experience with the 10 round drum mags? My interest in them is they appear not to be as bulky as the stick mags.

    Second question.

I put a TAPCO fixed stock, any suggestions for recoil pads? Recoil not horrible, but a pad would help make shooting more comfortable.

    Third question.

Anyone have a Tromix muzzle brake on theirs and how do you like it. Are there other muzzle brakes. Gun isn't bad shooting, but I figure a muzzle break will allow me faster follow up shots.

    Fourth question.

Rail systems, any preference for rail systems?

    Fifth question.

While shotguns are short range guns, I figure somekind of basic electronic sight wouldn't be a bad thing to have. Any of you guys have optics on your shotgun and how do you like them.

I will be shooting buckshot and slugs through the gun.

    Sixth Question.

Lights and lasers. Any feelings one way or the other?

The gun right now is reasonably balanced, easy to handle. I know that adding stuff will increase the weight of the gun. Don't want to create 20 pound shotgun.

Of course this is my EBS, so the badly it looks, the better.

    1) I use 10rd AGP Gen 2 mags. They work great but I dont't believe they have auto bolt hold open (you can manually set it by pushing up on the tab)

    2) I put a 1" standard pad on the back of my refinished romanian wood stock. Works just fine and is something like this.

    3) I use the PolyChoke-II on my Saiga. It's not as tacticool as anything from Tromix but the birdshoot is kept well grouped enough to blast clay pigeons without any issues.

    5) I do have a picatinney rail that slides and locks into the slide rail on the side that I've tried occasionally. I tried blasting clays using the EOTECH but the factory bead sight is just as easy and accurate for fast target acquisition (for me).

I refinished a romanian wood set and wallowed out the front HG to fit the Saiga 12. For the lower HG, I used Dinzag's lower HG retainer and trimmed the standard romanian "donkey dong" to allow for the 10rd mags while still giving me a VFG. For the upper HG, I made a heat shield using perforated aluminum sheet. It adds a bit of weight to the gun but this helps recoil (felt recoil is way less than with my Mossberg 500). This was my solution vs. going the tactical front HG rail route.

While stupid for hunting, this is my favorite informal clay shooting gun.

Do any of the aftermarket magazines hold the bolt open after last shot and what is their capacities.No. The LRBHO is a modification done to the shotgun. Alone, no mag will hold the bolt open.

Anyone have experience with the 10 round drum mags? My interest in them is they appear not to be as bulky as the stick mags.I was tempted to buy one, but everyone I know that has used one say they suck.

      Second question.

I put a TAPCO fixed stock, any suggestions for recoil pads? Recoil not horrible, but a pad would help make shooting more comfortable.Sorry, no input. I use an Ace stock which has a rubber pad.

      Third question.

Anyone have a Tromix muzzle brake on theirs and how do you like it. Are there other muzzle brakes. Gun isn't bad shooting, but I figure a muzzle break will allow me faster follow up shots.I don't have a tromix, however I know some people that have them, and they love them. I made my own custom brake. There are many muzzle devices available. Check out Mississippi Auto Arms, and Dinzag Arms. I have heard good things about the AK74 style brake for the S12

      Fourth question.

Rail systems, any preference for rail systems? I use a Chaos rail. It's great, and priced nice from the Chaos website. Again, check out Dinzag and Miss. Auto Arms.

      Fifth question.

I will be shooting buckshot and slugs through the gun.No input here. I use irons.

      Sixth Question.

Lights and lasers. Any feelings one way or the other? If you plan on using it as a HD shotgun, a light is kinda a must. Something lightweight like a TLR1, TLR2 (laser and light), etc. I use a streamlight M3 with a pressure pad. It's very lightweight, bright, and gets the job done. Not too bad on the wallet either.

The gun right now is reasonably balanced, easy to handle. I know that adding stuff will increase the weight of the gun. Don't want to create 20 pound shotgun.

Of course this is my EBS, so the badly it looks, the better.
