The 50660 shows as a 590 20" 9 shot with heat shield, etc. Definitely different gun; sturdier and more "tactical". The 590 has some upgraded parts. Dunno if it's got fixed chokes - many tactical shotguns do. It's going to be a good bit more expensive than the 500 combo.

The Big 5 Combo is a 500 and the short barrel is 18.5". It's 5 shot, and they can't be upgraded easily to 9 shot without buying an entire new barrel/mag assembly. It's definitely got fixed chokes, and is a cheap as you're going to get for a good-quality name-brand pump.

If you want a tactical/HD shotgun only, get the 20" higher-capacity model. If you want one to switch back and forth and are willing to give up the extra capacity, get the combo.

It'll be only for home defense. Don't shoot trap/skeet much. Acutally only been once.

I guess 9 shot capacity is a big factor...more than double the combo. But will the receiver be the same? Or will 50660 be thicker and stronger? While at Big 5, I looked on the underside of the shotgun, (where you would load the shells) and it is acutally stamped "590" on it. That's why I'm tempted...its about a $200 difference.

The Mossberg 500 - combo, is just that... a combo:
1. 18.5" is a smooth bore - no choke for home defense.
2. 28" vent ribbed - improved choke for trap/skeet/etc.

3. Additionally, this 500 - can add in a fully rifled barrel w/standard rifle sights, or a cantilevered scope.
4. You buy additional barrels, with different choke configurations.

In short, the 500 - in 5+1 config - is many guns in one.

Not sure I understand how your math of "8+1" (9) is more than double the "5+1" (6)... works... but anyway...

All the 5xx Mossbergs - use the same receiver, differences are magazine design, plastic parts vs. no plastic parts, and heavy barrels vs. standard barrels vs. standard barrel w/optional heat shield, and bayonet lug or not.

To make things more confusing, there are 5+1 and 8+1 versions of the 500 - the 8+1 - 500's are called "Special Purpose". On this topic, the Mossberg 500 5+1 allow interchangeable barrels, the "500 Special Purpose and the 590's" do not have interchangeable barrels... and there are 590A1 with the "clean out tube style magazines" in both 8+1 and 5+1 capacity.

Additionally, don't forget you can add side saddles. Like this:



At inside home range with #00 buck, you are going to put a 4" diameter hole in whatever you shoot at... if you really can't hit 1-2 targets after 6 shots... I'm not sure 9 is all that relevant.

Also note, if you end up with a self-defense instructor like mine... then 5+1 w/5 more - wont be enough. And the 8+1 - Mossberg 500 SP - my buddy was using was also not enough. Learning how to combat load, will be more relevant, if you ever really need to use that much ammo. When my instructor runs the "Gang members attack" - 5+1 w/5 shots or 8+1 - is rather academic ...

And for me... doing self defense shooting only gets boring... so with a 10 second barrel change, I can break paper, wood, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, bend 4 gauge steel targets, 50 gallon barrels, car wheels, etc... out to 200 yards with this config:

If you're looking for more capacity than the 5+1 model and you don't want to spend the extra money for the 590, you can get the 20 inch barrel 500 with 7+1 capacity. Big 5 sells that model also, and I believe they advertise it as the "security shotgun." I've seen it on sale for $249.

the Big 5 sale always pops up every other month but it is one of the better deals around.

I've used both the 590 and the 500, and both are fine guns. I think the receiver and buttstock are both the same. The only differences are the barrels and the magazines. The 590 has a heat shield and bayonet lug, for what that's worth.

The 590 comes with a hunting barrel and a plug to restrict the magazine capacity, which is usually required by law when you are hunting. You can, of course, remove the plug for home defense. If you ever need to use your shotgun for that, you almost certainly won't fire more than one or two shots.

They'll both feel about the same, and one will do the job about as well as the other. Pick the one you like the looks of, and you'll be happy.

If you plan on using your shotgun for home defense, you should practice a lot with it. Skill is much more important than hardware, and clay pigeons are an excellent and fun way to build skill.

Is it easy to remove the plug that restrict the magazine capacity for the Big 5 combo (aka 500)?? Also for the 500, the fixed choke, what does that do to the pattern?

So for the 590 home defense shotguns, there are no choke on them right?

The 500 - has a simple piece of wood - the size of a couple of shotshells - therefore you can't put in as many shotshells. Comes out in about 1 milisecond or less.

A "fixed" choke, simply means, you can not change it.


The 500 combo - has 2 barrels, the 18.5" home defense barrel - smooth - cylinder bore - no choke. The 28" vent ribbed barrel, it is "fixed choke" at the "improved choke" level.

The 590's are smooth - cylinder bore - no choke.

The actual difference between a 500 w/smooth - cylinder bore - no choke 18.5" barrel, and a 590 - is very very slight. And operationally there is nearly no difference at all.

Now, if you are saying - Big5 is selling Maverick 88's and calling them Mossberg 500s...

Then your rumor was at least false last year, when I bought my Mossberg 500 combo - from my local Big5. The model# 500A is stamped on the receiver, and I've purchased additional "Mossberg 500 Barrels" - which have fit onto the gun just fine.

The Mossberg combo at Big 5 is not the Maverick. And I know for a fact that even if it was(which it's not), the stocks do interchange between the Mav and the Mossberg, and I think the barrels do as well. The only differences between the Mav and the Moss are the location of the safety and a different slide action bar sytem as it pertains to hooking to the foregrip. The action bars on the Maverick are pegged directly to the grip, instead of an assembly that slides over the mag tube.
