    mossberg necessities

    hi everyone,

i bought my first shotgun and will be picking up a mossberg 500 soon and was wondering

    1) what sling and bag most people used to transport it. do some just carry the shotgun in the open?

    2) can someone explain the benefits of a pistol grip?

    3) do you really need to purchase a sight or can you aim relatively well on a stock gun?

    thanks for helping a newbie!

Is this shotgun will be use for home defense? If it is, below is my opinion:

1.Any sling will do. It's a user preference if you need it or not. Plus you will not carry it all the time for HD purposes. Any gun bag that can be locked positively will do.

    2. I don't think a pistol grip is a good choice for a Mossberg 500 since the safety is located on the top of the receiver. I bought a Mossberg 500 with a pistol grip and change it back to a traditional stock. It's much easier to use.

    3. not really. practice is more important.

I'm planning on getting a Mossberg as well.

      1. A simple two point sling is ideal if you want to carry it out on the field. A cheap Plano rifle case is good enough to transport it in your vehicle.

      2. I say nay to the pistol grips. I'm getting a Hogue 12 inch LOP stock. Perfect for tight areas like hallways but also allows for a traditional hold for better control of the shotgun.

      3. I'm getting the ghost ring model because thats what I'm used to. The bead is fine for just about everything you want to do with a shotgun. Just look at what Hickock45 does with his Mossberg 590A1 with bead sights on youtube. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

The 500 is a great shotgun. Please don't overdo it with too many mods. Keep it simple and master the 12 guage.

            1. I agree with Fubar, a good 2 point sling fine. I just carry mine I don't use a case, but there is absolutely no problem with getting a case. I would think a wal-mart soft case should do the trick if you want to go inexpensive

            2. traditional stock allows the best access to the safety, and feels most comfortable to me. If the gun is for home defense though, and you would prefer a pistol grip, look into the Knoxx SpecOps stock

            Here it is Knoxx stock

            3. Bead sight works fine for me, though again, if you prefer (insert your sight preference here) go with that.

Now, what you REALLY need for any Mossberg is, don't worry a lot about what to put on the gun, just put a whole bunch of rounds through it and become proficient with it

Good sights are essential for you to use your shotgun to its potential. It can be effective at pretty decent ranges with slugs.

I always recommend that people shoot the gun before modding it out, even if it's just target loads. I was dead set on getting ghost rings for improved accuracy for my Mossberg 500 but then I realized I can shoot accurately with slugs or buckshot out to 50 - 70 yards with just the bead sights on my 18" and 28" barrels.

I would recommend checking out extended safeties and an orange magazine follower.
My extended safety is a life saver for shooting with gloves on and it's very easy to see that the magazine tube is empty when the follower is blaze orange.

I walked into Turner's with the intention of getting a Maverick 88 and ended up walking out buying a Moss 500. I'm a shotgun newbie as well so you may not want to do what I'm about to do to my 500

                          1. Sling wise I'm going with this:

                          2. For access to extra rounds you might want to try this: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/c....aspx?a=644951
                          3. As for sights, I have an extra burris red dot sitting around so I'm going to mount it on my 500 along with a green laser sight because, again, I have one sitting around and lasers are just fun.

A cheap soft case and a slip over shotgun sling are what I've used for the last 30 years or so. The only reason that I use a sling is so that I my hands are free when walking to a blind or casual walking on my way to or from a field. While actually hunting, I remove the sling completely.

The reason to put a PG on a 500 is simple, you put one on if you decide thaat you want to be a mall ninja and/or looks are more important to you than practicality.
