    Whats the big deal??

Im in the market for a hd shotty and have decided i like the benelli M4. Now everyone here in san diego is more than happy to sell me one. But not many want to let you shoot one. What is the reasoning behind this whole tactical/pg ban at many ranges?

I'm not in San Diego, but this is the first I've ever heard of any ranges banning pistol grip shotguns(except for maybe the trap/skeet range). You've called up the range and spoken to the staff over the phone to confirm that they won't let you shoot a benelli m4 there?

Yes I asked why and kinda got the run around. I'm in no way knocking anyone for how they run their business. But just curious as to some insight.

The OP did not say it was banned because it had a pistol grip, The M4 I have seen has a traditional stock and a pistol grip and I bleive some skeet ranges would allow it. The problem he is encountering may have nothing to do with his grip but be based on the length of his barrel. Some skeet clubs claim that short barrels are too loud and present a safety issue.

Some indoor ranges will not allow pistol grip only shotguns because they can be difficult to shoot accurately. With a pistol gripped shoulder stock on a Benelli you should be able to shoot at any range that allows shotguns.
Which SD range has a tactical shotgun ban?????

Some ranges have diffrent rules, I know the ones I go to will allow you to shoot your 18" barrel shotgun but only shooting slugs. And over at the other range (trap range) they wont allow anything under 22" to be shot at the clays.

kinda leaves those who want to try out their HD shotguns out of the loop : /

The Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club has a tactical shotgun match every 2-3months and allows pistol grip shotguns. Much better practice than you gill get from shooting at an indoor range.

Understood. Forgive my lack of knowledge on the subject, but how is a shorter barrel any more dangerous than a long one. I thought the operator was the only inherent danger.

shotguns are probably just more likely to damage the range property...especially in hands of the average joe. i know that I know how to shoot, but can you imagine all the homies that would show up with their "shotty" and just blast away? they probably want 1 projectile for a reason.

I don't know the basis of the argument. The louder report is more likely to cause hearing damage and I suppose it some absent minded fool can more easily swing a short barrel to point in an unsafe direction that a longer barrel. For example, in a crowd queing about the gun racks it is much easier for some idiot to absent mindedly point his short barrel in someone's face. The fact is that is the primary reason to get a short barrel sg; to swing it about quickly in tight spaces.

Ask these ranges their reasoning and get back to us. Then we will know their concerns. Thanks.

                        ><

What was the intended use for the shotgun when it was purchased? Why did you choose that particular shotgun.

There are ranges that cater to the different uses.

Policies are usually inacted because there is a need. Rules are in place for a reason. The reason might not be realized to a person who is only present for short periods of time.

Well it's not like there are that many ranges here to begin with...but which one won't let you shoot it?

American Shooting Center in Kearny Mesa will. I shoot mine there all the time.

I believe Iron Sights up in Oceanside will let you...just having a little trouble remembering for sure if I shot it there before. But they allow shotguns so it shouldn't be an issue.

Discount Gun Mart on Morena will not but they don't allow any rifles/shotguns on their range.

                          Peace

The ones I've seen have been what you said. They say "no pistol grip shotguns" but they mean PG ONLY shotguns....so you don't miss and blow away the ceiling. I never had a problem shooting my PG/stocked 870 at a "No PG" range.

Well that makes sense. I didn't think of that. I will call arpund and ask anyways. I am curious a to rationale for pg and short barrels.
