first time trap shooting, damn thats fun!

so i've been shooting ever since i was a kid, but mostly pistol stuff. the last year or so, i've been getting more into longer distance rifle shooting. however, today was the first time i've ever shot clays. i've shot a few shotguns before, but never i never put much thought into it. well, today i was out with a few buddies, and got to shoot a round of 25 clays. damn it, that was too much fun!

after today, there is no way i cant buy a shotgun, but which one? i shot a benelli nova today, and i'm pretty sure its not the gun for me. i'm leaning towards the the mossberg 500 combo that big5 sells, but i'm sure i'll change my mind 5 or 10 more times before i actually pull the trigger.

    anyway, had to share!

If you are going to shoot clays you will need a shotgun with a long barrel that takes choke tubes. The Mossberg combo sold at Big 5 does not. The long barrel has a fixed modified choke and the short barrel is an open cyllinder.

        ><

Here is my marginal .02 worth of advice

Take a lesson or hook up with an old timer to show you how to shoulder, sight down a shotgun, shooting stance and what is meant by gun fit.

Next, shoot as many different shotguns as possible.....when you find one that feels good to shoot and you can hit some clays....thats the one you go buy.

Every first time shooter I've ever taken shooting I've told the same thing: the most fun you can have shooting at a range is with a shotgun. Shooting trap is extremely fun, and when you get good at that, skeet is even more of a good time, and since I tried sporting clays, it has topped my list!

OP: if you're looking for an inexpensive shotgun to get you started, first check out the big 3, mossberg 500, remington 870 and winchester 1300. They are all great guns with proven track records and each have different strengths. I prefer the 1300, because that's what I shoot the most.
