It looks like that has a cylinder. IIRC cylinder action shotguns are illegal.

the Circuit Judge might be considered a shotgun AW due to the revolving cylinder. The issue is, with a rifled barrel, it does not meet the CA defintion of shotgun that is in 12020, which says that a shotgun has a smoothbore.

PC 12276.1(a) classifies a rotating cylinder on a shotgun as an AW.

That begs the question (and I don't know the answer myself): is a rifled barrel firearm considered a "shotgun" for legal purposes, or is it considered a revolving carbine?

this is the only definition of shotgun in the PC,

12020(c)(21) As used in this section, a "shotgun" means a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed shotgun shell to fire through a smooth bore either a number of projectiles (ball shot) or a single projectile for each pull of the trigger.
as you can see, the definition states smooth bore, so a rifled bore shoulder-fired firearm that shoots shot wouldn't meet the definition of shotgun. But, CA only legally defined shotgun as it applies in 12020, note that the definition is only deals with that "section", 12020, and not the entire chapter of firearms law. It has been opined by The Right People that even though the definition is only a section definition, since there is no other definition in the PC, that it could be assumed to apply chapterwide.

It looks as if it fits the definition of a short barreled shotgun. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_California

how would it be a SBS? The Circuit Judge is a shoulder fired firearm that has an 18.5" barrel, and a 36" OAL. It doesn't fall into the SBS parameters.

Yes. I caught my mistake and corrected that post. I think it is a shotgun if it is designed to take either a rifled or a smooth bore barrel, just as most barreles for a Remington 870 are smootbore, but you can get a rifled barrel and it is still a shotgun. If it is sold so that you cannot switch the rifled barrel for a smooth bore, that would be different.

there has been no mention of the barrel being removable on the Circuit Judge. Taurus/Rossi was planning on selling a .410-only smooth-bore version, which would definitely be a shotgun, but the .45/.410 rifled-version could definitely be argued that it wasn't a shotgun, and therefore it wouldn't be a shotgun AW. Would I chance it at this time, no.
