Buying Long 870 Barrel Online

What are the risks and what should I know about buying a used Remington 870 Express barrel online? I need a 28" Vent Rib Rem Choke barrel and realize it must be chambered for 3" shotshells.

Are there places to avoid? I may have one lined up for $129 through GunsAmerica, which includs a choke. Shipping is $15.

The dealer says it is 98% to 99% with no damage but what does that really mean?

Am I overpaying? I would prefer to buy from a CalGunner.

I've bought barrels for both Remington and Mossberg guns from both Cabela's and Midway.

You can find better prices if you shop around in the auction sites. You'll find take off barrels from new guns that have been made into something else, but most often it's used stuff. If you have any questions just ask the seller, but you still run some risk.

I've purchased a number of barrels via the WTS section here, and also online. If you look, you can find some on sale once in a while. Remington makes a lot of barrels, just read the description carefully and make sure it's what you want.

That is a $200 barrel so yes that is a good price. As for that 98% 99% mess, that is his opinion of the condition of the barrel and of course it is subjective. What the heck does 99% mean, one small scratch, one small rust spot, who the heck knows what that mess means. Pictures tell the story of the finish and the seller would have to tell you if there is any rust or pitting.

I seldom sell anything used and when I do I post pictures of every angle, good closes ups and will refer to any issue in the description and point to it in the picutures. If the barrel you are looking at has good pictures that is assuring.

Using the ask the seller a question feature you can ask about any concerns you have. Also, look at the sellers ratings. This will give you an idea about how he conducts business. If this is a new seller or just some guy selling an extra barrel he has and the guy has not feedback ratings, you are taking a risk. It could be a perfect transactions as every seller has to have his first sale sometime. You decide if this is a good deal for you. Aslo, look on www.gunbroker.com as they show up there also.

Again, thanks aippi. I think I found a better deal than the gunsamerica one. I really didn't like the fact that neither seller on GA had any feedback when they had between 500 and a thousand transactions. I am arranging for payment via paypal to a calgunner with a solid itrader history, mainly as a seller and several times selling 870 barrels, for even a better price than seems to be the market on gunsamerica.

The seller found a problem with his barrel that he pointed out to me and that deal is off, while he thinks he has a better one coming in. Meanwhle, it's back to scanning the internet for a 28.

By brand new I imagine it was taken from a 500 duo package. You got a a very fair deal. One reason I didn't buy that package was the 28 had a fixed modified choke and while it is good for most everything, I want the option to use differenet choke tubes. Meanwhile, I have been watching gunbroker and woul have made a deal on it except for something I need to check over the phone and haven't gotten around to it.
