    Mossberg 500A

I have a very old Mossberg 500A it was my fathers and now is mine. I have removed the original 24" barrel, attached an 18.5" and had some fun with it over the weekend at the range. My only complaint was that the mag tube allowed for only 2 shells. I came home to take apart the gun but did not find a plug. Is there another reason why my mag tube is restricting the number of shells I can load? Please help.

    Thanks in advance.

There is usually a 1/4" dowel inside the mag tube that is the plug. Take the barrel off, point the gun down and shake. The plug should come out.

The gun is set up for hunting with the plug in it, two shots in the tube maximum. It will come out the hole that the barrel screw fits into on the mag tube. Hang onto that dowel because if you, or someone in your family someday, ever have a hankering to go hunting you'll need the plug to be legal.

Thats what I thought, so I have tried to force the plug out but there isnt one in there. Anyone have any other Ideas what is restricting the # shells in the mag tube? I want to remove the mag tube but she's on there so tight i would most likely cause damage to the tube trying to vice grip it off...

There is no mag cap in the traditional sense. The "cap" is meant to be permanently attached to the tube. The tube can be unscrewed from the receiver, though it uses "loctite" to prevent it from unscrewing.

The use of a vise is recommended. Heat the mag tube/receiver junction only enough to soften the adhesive. Normal right hand threads that unscrew in a counter clockwise direction.

You might try taking the barrel off, then load the mag tube. The dowel should protrude out the threaded hole where the barrel nut is screwed in when the barrel is mounted.

If that doesn't work, then removing the mag tube as above would be the next solution.

The mag tube isn't dented, by chance, is it?

Thanks for the help :-) I tried removing the barrel and forcing the dowel out that way but didn't have any luck which is why i decided to post. ill try remove the mag tube with the tips from swifty. . If that doesn't work than I'm over taking it in somewhere. a new mossberg 500 is less than $300. It was my dad's who passed away so I don't want to change it too much and don't want to damage it. Just thought if it was an easy fix i would take care of it if not it's kind of a relic and ill just hold it for sentimental value. As always great knowledge being shared here on calguns. I appreciate it fellas.

              Cheers happy safe shooting
