    Transporting shotgun & ammo?

I have been reading through the multitude of FAQ's for open carrying and remembered that I had been told by an ECPD officer a few years ago that when I transport my shotgun in my vehicle I need to keep the ammunition separate from the shotgun itself and that the shotgun needed to be "out of reach".

Can someone point me to a page that discusses this?

The amount of information on these forums and various sites and blogs is overwhelming

What is the truth on this...?

I was wondering this as well...because say you have a tactical bag that holds your unloaded shotgun and ammo in separate compartments and you have a truck with no trunk...are you still in code compliance?

Long guns simply have to be unloaded, which means no ammo in chamber or inserted mag. Ammo can be in the same case as the gun. There is no law requiring that they be out of reach.

The federal school zone law requires that long guns be in a locked case or rack while in the school zone, the California law does not.

The policeman was wrong on both counts, but was probably describing the way he likes to see it done.

Can there be an empty mag inserted to the rifle during transport?

It is not loaded if sitting on the back seat next to a box of ammo, but it is loaded if there is a single live shell in a sidesaddle (unexpended shell attached to the firearm)!

            Wrong.

In the case of People v. Clark (1996) a shotgun shell attached to the shotgun, and not chambered or placed in a position where it was able to be fired, was declared to be legal under California law and the charge of having a loaded firearm against Clark was dismissed.

Yep. You are right and the court has interpreted the law as such. But you are also wrong in special circumstances covered in the material to which you supplied a link. (for example in certain state offices)

the ammo separate thing is ancient fud. as is the out of reach. it can be in your lap. the ammo can be anywhere BUT the mag or chamber.
