    Length of pull

I'm in the market for an O/U for trap and skeet. I've seen alot of used guns online that are in my price range. Some of those for sale feature a LOP. I know that LOP is important as a shotgun that does not fit seldom preforms well in the clay games. My question is this, if I hold my right arm out ,elbow bent , with my index finger extended upward and measured the distance from my inner elbow to the 1st nuckle will this equal length of pull?

Only if every human was the same. It is not an exact science and something that you are just going to have get out there and shoot weapons to discover. You might fine the LOP of 14" good on one model shotgun and not on the next. There may be some rule of thumb that some of the trap and skeet guys can post in on but I know guys my height that like 14" LOP and guys over 6" that like shorter then standard LOP. You will get some good answers here.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

The old "elbow to finger" measurement only confirms the measurement between your elbow and your finger. There are also cant, pitch, drop and cast to consider when you're fitting a shotgun.

Pick-up the shotgun and hold it.

Place one hand on the forarm, and the other on the grip.

Forget the trigger. DO NOT place your finger on the trigger...yet.

Now with this hold, place the shotgun in the port arms position (barrel up), and QUICKLY shoulder it. Does it shoulder comfortably? Now quickly unshoulder it. Does the butt pad snag on your clothing?

Now do the same, but this time with the shotgun barrel pointed down. QUICKLY shoulder it. Does it shoulder comfortably? Now QUICKLY unshoulder it. Does it unshoulder comfortably, or did it snag on your clothing?

Now take it one step further, and imagine if you had a heavy coat or jacket on. Or how about wet-weather gear? Would you be able to shoulder it, or unshoulder it, comfortably.

These are a few things to consider BEFORE even thinking how your finger fits on the trigger.

        Just food for thought.

          ><

Get in your shooting stance....hold your shotgun at your rib cage.....Close Your Eyes.....bring the shotgun to your shoulder and mount it as if you are to take a shot with your eyes closed...Open your dominate eye (right eye for most right hand shooters).....Do you see this? Just the bead sitting on the rib

If not ....it does not fit

^^^This^^^ is the best advice you'll get. You'll sometimes find a gun off the rack that will come very close to this standard. Those are the ones you buy... the rest, take them and get them fitted.

You'd be amazed at just how much difference a well fitted gun, combined with some sound fundamentals, will make.

I tried the Feeders "close your eyes exersize" with my pump gun and it works! Who can I take a shotgun to in the East bay to have it fit?

Some OF's know a thing or two.

There is a guy out of Birds Landing Sporting Clays that fitted stocks, if he's still there.

United Sportsman in concord may be able to help you.

Unlees you found a shotgun you really love and must shoot, may want to try to find some thing off the rack that fits first......many bucks saved!
