Best thing for you is to take a private lesson at your local clays club, attend a NRA Basic Shotgun class, hang around some clay shooters at the range and do some net homework. One or all will take you a long way

Its not the ammo. I have run the field more times than I can count with Wally World value packs and routinely break 22 or better and often with full or modified chokes. If you are shooting 12 or 20 ga., the pattern with any choke is more than big enough. If you break the targets over the center post, all shots in skeet are 22 yards, except Stations 7 and 8. It takes only 3 pellets to break a target (I'm told). My guess is there is a hitch in your swing and you are probably shooting behind. The advice to take a lesson is good.

I have been told to leave the Winchester Universal (Bulk) ammo sold at WalMart alone but there is nothing wrong with using the the Federal stuff in a pump gun.

A 500 barrel without a screw-in choke??? How old is this gun? How long is the barrel? Skeet is usually close range, and the choke is just slightly smaller than cylinder size. I think it is 0.005 under cylinder. A real skeet gun probably wont pattern good past 20 yards.

The only thing I can say is find/buy a 26"+ barrel with screw-in choke. You should be patterning good out to 30 yards with just an Improved Cylinder and Federal cheapo shells from Walmart. You shouldn't need a choke tighter than Modified for general clay shooting.

How about a cyllinder bore (no choke). I know I need to buy another barrel but for now all I have is an HD barrel. I have been trying to shoot traps and it is a Mother.

I shot four boxes of Remington bulk sport loads, purchased at Wal-Mart, yesterday at my club.

19, 21, 22, 21 were my scores at 16 yards with a Mossberg 500 sporting a 24 inch ported hunting barrel, modified choke tube installed. I'm getting that gun good and dialed in, and it performs very well with both sport loads and Remington Gun Club. Going to be changing the choke out to Improved Modified for my next trip.

The Federal and Winchester bulk ammo... yeah, kinda crappy. But the Remington stuff runs good for me and patterns well.

If you're shooting trap at 16 yards or more, and your gun is an 870 Express (if I recall correctly) a 26 inch barrel with Rem Choke should be about your minimum. A 28 or 30 inch might be better, but you get the idea.

Shop around some online and you will find somewhat better prices.

Yep. The 16 yard line and I am watching for a long barrel that will accept chokes. Question, until I can get a choked barrel is trap or skeet a better choice for the cylinder bore. It seems in trap that as the clay is moving away it is out of range before I can get a shot off, as slow as I am. A guy borrowed it and nailed some but he was fast and hit them right out of the house.

i know alot of people that shoot in the 20's using the walmart stuff. Hell i got a 25 last time i shot with it.

I bought some Walmart stuff just this past hour and I am not sure if it is the same as what they sell in the bulk packs. I bought a couple of boxes of Winchester "Super-Target" 1 ounce 7.5. it cost slightly more than the stuff in the bricks but I got it because the bulk packes were all 1-1/8 oz and I want to try something betwei believe the bulk packs are Winchester "Universal". I would have bought the Universal stuff but they were out of it in 1 oz. I think it will have less recoil as the 1-1/8 ounce stuff, but not be as expensive as the 26 gram reduced recoil Winchester AA stuff.

The money saved on the expensive shells will be used to bribe the range staff to give me all the weak ready to be killed clays.
