    Recoil pad, or new stock?

hey guns, i just picked up my new mossberg 500, 8 shot 20" barrel. after takign it to a range and shooting about 20 2 3/4" slugs through it, im looking into getting a recoil pad, or possibly a new stock. i think i want to retain the traditional sport stock, as that would retain operation of the tang safety better, and i also dont really like the look of the tactical stocks. im not a mall ninja.

i've been looking into the hogue overmold stock, and limbsaver pads, and i was wondering how these two products compare to each other?

anyways, thanks guys in advance, and ill try and post up some pics soon when i get a few other things and figure out how to post pictures, lol.

it wont compare to a knoxx spec ops stock with a limb saver. It's not mall ninja if it actually works and makes the shotgun fit better to you with its adjustable lop.

bottom line is that it feels great, works great, and shoots better. enuf said.

I have a Hogue overmold 12" LOP on my 500. It replaced a Knoxx Spec-Ops. The Knoxx does reduce felt recoil, but when I installed GRS. The cheek weld and sight picture was just not right for me.
I am happy with the Hogue product.

The Specops has very little drop and will definitely change your point of aim, but it's great at reducing recoil.

They also make the Compstock, which is more traditional stock shape and drop. I haven't tried one yet, though.

I put a Limbsaver on my 500 and it's great. I did try out a hogue overmold stock but returned it because the recoil pad didn't feel as cushioned as the limbsaver and the limbsaver doesn't fit on it as a replacement.

Adding the Limbsaver to the factory stock may be all you need to do... along with mounting the gun properly. Mounting the gun properly will often go a long way to improving

If you have really long arms like I do the reduced length of pull (LOP) stocks are not always the answer. The factory Mossberg stock on my ancient 500 is a standard LOP and is almost a skosh too short for me for conventional shooting like hunting and clays, but it does very well when squaring up the stance for defensive shooting. My suggestion is to play with the gun a bit, get used to mounting it properly to the shoulder and bringing the stock up to your head and not your head down to the stock and you may find your sessions much more pleasurable.

All that said, the Hogue units are first class (IMO) and when combined with a Limbsaver or Pachmayr Decellerator pad, they are a very good combination.

My friend has the same shotgun. Both he and I don't like the Knoxx 'AR' style stock w/pistol grip (we just don't like the look of them on a shotgun), so I recommended he get a Limbsaver recoil pad. He bought the slip-on one, same one I had on my Benelli SNT, and it made a world of a difference when shooting his shotgun now. He switches between the factory and the ATI pistol grip stock, and uses the same recoil pad. The gel pad really makes a difference when you're shooting buckshot or slugs all day long.

I agree most with BigDogatPlay (quoted below). I also agree with you OP on preferring to keep a non-pistol grip style stock on Mossbergs due to the tang safety location. Again I think BigDog's advice is pretty close to what I would have said, but if you are really set on Knoxx you might want to check this out:

This is the Blackhawk/Knoxx compstock which has the recoil reduction of the spec ops stock but with the sporter style design (no pistol grip). It's a little cheaper than the spec ops stock to boot. I don't own it and can't attest to its quality, but if it's anything like the spec ops stock it is probably a winner in that department.
