Someone took it apart or they could not have switched parts out on you. If the slide does not fit the forend tube assembly then somone has pulled a switch. The action bars would not be out of spec but simply from and older model. You did not say what model or how old, and yes there are difference in the older non flex tab weapons. That is problem with buying anything used from someone you do not know. Police trade ins are notorious for being canibalized prior to being traded in as I am sure other weapons are. Just like take good stuff off a car before it is traded.

Yes, take it to a gun smith and get the right parts no reason to give up on the weapon when a couple parts gets it rocking again.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

The guys gave perfect instructions to the OP on how to remove this assembly so it is either that................. or........the shell latch has moved forward. Check to see if the forward trigger pin will go in. If not, then tap the shell latch back into place by lining up the hole in the receiver and the shell latch and push the forward trigger pin in. Now remove the beech bolt assembly. Issue over. Can't think of anything else except operator error.
I see what you're saying now - just wanted to get a better understanding, and as always, you never disappoint!
you don't rise to the occasion,
