    Cheaper semi vs. nice pump

Interested in getting my first 28 inch barrel shotgun for field work and skeet shooting. I've had some experience with 870's and I currently have an 18" mossberg 500 that I'm giving to my dad for HD and snake control at his new house in Magalia. I was very happy with pumps until my stepdad got his Benelli m2 field. I love that gun. No recoil, very accurate. It made me want a semi auto. The only problem...that Benelli is a hefty chunk of change for me. So my dilemma is whether to get a cheaper semi auto like a Mossberg 930 or maybe be able to stretch out to a Remmy 1100, or to spend the cash on a nice pump like a Remmy wingmaster. I would like wood furniture and my budget is probably in the$ 6-700 range. What say you? Thanks.

There's always the FN SLP too how long has Remington made the 1100 that's all I have to say about the Remy. I haven't heard anything bad about the 930 either but either way its not a Benelli. I think you might have just missed the Benelli rebates someone correct me if I'm wrong but you could have bought a M2 and mailed in something like a $150 rebate on that model.

The 11-87 is in the running too. Is the 11-87 considered better quality than the 1100? They seem to be similar in base price.

As a Remington 1100CM owner for 7 years, I would look at the FN SLP, or the Mossberg 930, if the M2 is out of your price range. These were two I was looking at until I shot a Salient M2 Benelli. End of story.

A good pump will eat anything, with an auto you may find certain loads can cause problems and hang ups.

As much as I like the m2's and every other brand they make, the 930 is a solid gun at a good price. Personally, for a field gun I have absolutely no care of how it looks as long as it isn't shiny any scaring the birds away. I found a 500atp and a Winchester auto for 150 each in new condition. Not as nice as a benelli but at a quarter of the cost and drops birds just as well (for me). No 3-1/2" chamber though. Might be something to think about as well

If you don't mind used, you can get great deals on 1100s and 11-87s. It's easy to find clean ones for $400-500. They're great guns for the money - soft shooting, reliable, and lots of parts available. If you then want to upgrade, you can sell it for nearly what you paid, which you won't be able to do with a new gun.

That's what I did when I wanted to start with semis - cruised the shops until I found a couple of great deals on like-new 1100s. I've been pretty happy with them so far, but I like the value of lightly used guns.

The 11-87 is more flexible about what it feeds than the 1100.

Beretta 3901's are about $600 new. They are soft shooting due to the amazing Beretta self regulating gas recoil system and will shoot anything you can feed it.

I have the AL 391 which is the newer generation and about $900 new but the operating systems are nearly identical.

imo an older Wingmaster could be included in your pump selections.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. Right now, I'm kind of leaning towards the mossberg 930. By the reviews I've seen, it seems to be a good deal for the money. I might be able to get a brand new one at my local shop for about $500. Seems like a good deal. I would like an old wingmaster too, but I do want the decreased recoil of the autoloader.

also... use the "search" function here on the forum for access to past discussions on any and all of the candidate shotguns you are evaluating.

For a shotgun, I would go with a pump.... but that is just me. Ive shot a few 930s and they had no problems, felt pretty solid but they weren't mine so I cant really say how dependable they are

IMHO you cant go wrong with a mossberg 500
