    Best 870 Barrel

For HD. Is it better to have a bead site barrel or the kind with rifle sites mounted on it. What do you use and why is one better than the other.

while either one will work, my preference is on the bead site. It's just simple and no fuss. alot of people will chime in why the ghost rings or bead site is better, but you should definitely choose the one you feel is more comfortable to shoot with and view targets with.

I have rifle sights on my 870 because it was orginially set up as a deer hunter.
On my 1100 CM with a vent rib, I use the Williams Firesights. For slug shots out to 75-100yds a rifle sight set up is the only way to go. I live out in the country, so for my HD shotgun I hope to use it at a farther distance than someone in the city or suburbs.

If you can't shoot good, at least look good shooting

I use a bead, always have and always will. Slugs on target at 50-100 yards are second nature (many slugs are meant to be zeroed at 100 yards)
So far, through training and shooting tons of shotguns with every bell and whistle on them, I have yet to find a reason for any fancy sights.

you just fall back on your level of training.

I am far sighted so the rear sight in a ghost ring set up is just a blur.

I can't shoot with a bead. I even use my 28" barrel like a rifle when I shoot clays: I close one eye.

I don't think it's a joke. I can't see a rear ghost ring well enough to use it without reading glasses.

For the OP, I prefer rifle sights mounted on the barrel for the reason stated above, although at HD distances, a bead sighted barrel will work quite well, especially if the bead is replaced with a sight such as the Big Dot, which is epoxied directly over the existing bead.

I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!
