How do I take off Mossberg's collapsible stock??

I am a gunsmithing noob and want to switch out the Collapsible stock on my Mossberg 500.

How the crap do I do this? Only hardware visible are two phillips head screws on either side of the faux buffer tube above the pistol grip. Iv'e heard mention of a hex screw but have no idea how to find it....

couldn't find this project on the Gunsmith How To's forum either.

riiight.... I'm an idiot, figured it out:

for those who may be as temporarily retarded as I was, here you go:

1: REMOVE rubber butt-plate (didn't think of this at first)
2: unscrew phillips screw on slide release button side,
3: pop out the bolt that appears to be a screw on the ejection port side
4: pull out the collapsible stock
5: use a 1/4" allen wrench to remove bolt holding the remaining pistol grip on
6: remove pistol grip

ALL DONE, unfortunately my replacement stock came with a much longer 3/16" socket screw so it's not compatible with my Mossy. ok my attempt at redemption is over....

sometimes the stock, even when all the pins and screws are out, still is "stuck" on. so what I do is push the stock all the way to collapsed mode, and ram it back to full length real quick and the momentum just takes it right off. cheers

Glad to hear you aren't blindly using the longer screw. I don"t quite understand the set up you have, but have read where some fold messed up the safety on the Mossberg when they used to long a screw to attach an after market stock. Possibly all you need to get is a screw of the correct length or you can shorten that one. Just be sure you know what you are doing.

KLAW- possibly, screw length and hex head that came with my top-folder is all wrong. The top-folder came with a 2" long, 3/16" hex head, which won't replace the original 1 1/4" long, 1/4" hex head, different thread pattern too... The top-folder's pistol grip does need a longer screw to attach it to the shotgun, i'm headed to the hardware store now...

I didn't think about whether or not it could affect the safety, thanks for pointing that out...
