    Friend has problem

The other day my friend came over to shoot.

My Mossberg 500 was flawless. His not so much.

He loaded up and when he would pump the action the shotgun would spit out all the shells. It wasn't loading properly. What gives?

It worked fine as a single shot but when you load it up with shells, it spits them all out as soon as the fired shell is ejected.

Anyone else experience this before? Is it a simple part swap or will he need to take it to a gunsmith?

Could be debris behind one of the shell stops. Have a gunsmith look it over to be sure.

This happened to my 1300 Defender too what I think I did was bent the trigger assembly during installation after field stripping. Particularly the lever that holds the rounds in place I haven't messed with it since it started happening about 7 years ago one of these days I was thinking of just buying a new complete assembly.

I forgot to mention that it was brand new at the time when we were firing it and it had that problem.

Had it ever been dissasembled, or are you saying it came from the factory that way? Its been a while since I've had a mossberg, but IIRC if the shell stops got bent, it would cause this.

Sounds like a good theory. The only time he messed with it was to change the butt-stock. I'll let him know.

Has your friend considered contacting Mossberg on this problem? If it was me, I wouldn't attempt to fire it again till the problem was resolved.

These shotguns are very easy to work on and repair. There really isn't much to them.

I'm also inclined to say that the shell stop(s) could be bent...

How ever it's always best to also contact a competent gunsmith and see what he says. It never hurts to ask a professional.

If it is brand new, and especially if you bought it from a gun store, I would take it to them and ask what gives. The guys at Big 5 wouldn't have a clue.

When your buddy swapped the stock, did he mess with the cartricge interruptor or cartridge stop as depicted in Fig 9 of the manual. Here is a PDF of it http://www.mossbergs.com/manuals/500_835_590_535_en.pdf I don't think he would have had to in order to swap stocks.

I've owned a 500A close to 20 yrs. I also have three sets of furniture for it and swap them out when I get bored with what's on it. I swap out the butt stock, forearm etc and have never had to mess with the receiver.

Just recently (Christmas day) tore it down to install a few new Xmas gift items, extended safety and new magazine spring with a red aluminum follower. Did a total tear down with no pro. Took me just under an hour to do all of it as I did a complete cleaning.

Your friend may of messed with the internals, which he did not have to do as the butt stock bolts up in the back of the receiver. And if he took off the forearm, he still wouldn't of had to mess with the receiver. If he didn't touch anything inside then taking it to where he purchased it is his first line of action.

I would also call Mossberg and see what they say about it. Here's customer info from their web site on getting repairs etc., including contact info.

Best of Luck and Happy New Year!

Took it to a gunsmith. Works fine now.

I'll guess it was the nut that connects the front grip to the butt stock.

? You mean the magazine nut that holds the barrel in place? There is no nut that connects the front grip to the butt stock...The only nut is for the magazine tube...

Well it's fixed anyhow...how much did it cost for the gunsmith to look & fix it?
