Rem 870 problem

I have a 20" 8 shot 870 that is giving me a problem. After a few shots, the pump locks up. There is no rhyme or reason to it. It will lock up on all ammo Winchester, federal, bird shot, buck shot, magnums. Doesn't matter. It's not the slide release. If you pull really hard on the slide, it will eject the shell.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

First go to www.aiptactical.com and click on the red link "Install and Cleaning" polish the chamber as stated on that page and if that does not relsove the issue send me an e-mail and we will try and find the problem. Chambers get dirty and tight and most of us run something down the bore but it is smaller then the chamber and does not clean the chamber well enough. So mess builds up and this causes extraction issues, which is what you are having. Cleaning the chamber and polishing it to get that mess out the first thing you would do to trouble shoot any extraction issue.

I had the same issue a few weeks ago when I was in Twentynine Palms shooting off Amboy Rd. The pump kept getting locked up after every 4-5th shot. I always have my range bag with me so I sat down for awhile and cleaned and polished her and got back into shooting clays with no problems after that. She shot 120 rounds with no hitch. I'm sure the instructions down below will clear your issue.

Unfortunately, Remington's QC has gone way down recently---both in guns and ammo---having said that, a quick chamber polish on your 870 should make a big difference---good luck!

I think the problem is the the steel base shells. The real brass shells don't seem to have problems. Brass is softer and more elastic. The steel shells seem to expand and lock in the chamber. Shorter bases are more prone to locking, because they move/tilt/rotate a slight amount. Look at 2 identical short base shells, one that has been fired and one that is new, and you will notice a large gap on one side. This is because the base is not 100% perpendicular to the hull after firing. It is most likely caused in the Remington because it only has one locking lug at the top of the bolt. With sloppy tolerances, there might be slightly more movement on the bottom of the bolt than on the top. That would cause the base to get cocked on the hull and stick in the chamber. Just because the base looks like brass does not mean it is made from brass. Some/most are brass washed. Use a magnet to see whether the base is steel or brass.

Remington shotgun shells are the only ones that I know of that are still a one piece design (compression formed). One piece hulls wouldn't get cocked bases like the other shells. I think Active shells may also be a one piece design. Are you getting jams with Remington Gun Club shells? They are one piece with steel basses.

The jam in the video is what happens to me. I disassembled her today and she is a mirror shin in the chamber and bore. She is also pretty new. Guessing at the round count I'd say she has about 150-200 rounds through her.
Even if she has a mirror shine in the chamber, would she still need a polish job?

I agree it's the steel base that's causing the problem. Stick a magnet to it to find out if it's steel.

Lube it and polish...I cleaned mine before shooting and no problems. My friend refused to do the same when he got his (we picked it up same day as mine) and he had the jam issue. I cleaned and lubed it and next round no issues.

I polished mine just because.

ditto on what everyone said, had the same problems, polished every god damn thing connected to it, and it has been working like a charm.
