    Frangible 00 buck

Anyone used Frang 00? I keep #4 buck in my HD shottie now due to the reduced risk of over-penetration

Is frangible safer (my house has walls about 6" wide, 2" of that being drywall and 4" of 'open space')

    possible downsides?(any price differences excluded)

If you've used it what do you say?

I'm afraid it's still going to penetrate. I have no experience with Fang but if the frangible is able to withstand a 9k to 10k psi chamber pressure, the sheet rock material would have to be really hard in order for the frangible to break up. I've shot a bean bag and it went through both layers of 1/2" drywall which is standard with todays houses. Yes I built a mock up wall. Range was roughly 10 feet.

All of the research you ever wanted to read about shotguns and drywall is right here at the Box O' Truth. BTW, #4 Buck goes through 6 sheets of drywall!

These guys are awesome and they test all kinds of firearms shooting into everything imaginable.

        Here's the bottom line:

        1) If you want to IMMEDIATELY take down a bad guy, then you will need to use a good 00-buck...period.

        2) There are no good loads to take down "bad guys" that will not penetrate at least a few wall of drywall in your home.

        3) You still need to aim your 00-buck to hit a bad guy. If you think you can be sloppy (not aiming), and think only 4 or 5 balls of that 00-buck hit will do it...then you are wrong. The impact energy will be significantly reduced, and your 00-buck was for naught.

        4) You cannot choose one or the other. (Fast take-down or non over-penetration). If you want too defend your loved ones, the shot MUST take-out the bad guy immediately. (Massive blood loss is the only guaranteed way. All this dynamic other doo-doo is myth, or 50/50 at best). And in order to do that, it will penetrate many walls...period.

        5) Your firearm skill will determine if you should even have a shotgun in your house for self-defense.

You want to trust your life to a frangeable, go right ahead. In my opinion, it is not too wise.

          I'm with raymond on this.

People seem to think that bad guys are somehow more vulnerable than drywall is.
Fact is, bad guys have this interesting way of wanting to shoot you back after your shot them (unlike drywall)

Doesn't matter how many walls you've shot, unless you've shot a man, then you're just guessing.

To be honest, I've never shot a wall. I've trained with my shotgun, so therefore I don't have to worry about buckshot going throw any walls, because its gonna hit its target.

Learn to shoot, and your ability to protect yourself and your family will not have to depend on your ammo.
you don't rise to the occasion,
you just fall back on your level of training.

            Hey wait a minute, "FatalKitty".

Does that mean he cannot use frangeable .22 boolits.

hey I hear you guys, training is the most important thing in any HD situation. I know that a round of #4 buck is not a miracle shot that immediately disperses and will take down anything without wall penetration, I know that anything under 30' (with my shottie) will have to be dead center. the problem though is in the training. training does not prepare you for waking up at 3 am adrenaline pumping, with a living breathing dude that can quickly jump any direction and possibly start shooting back.

Take my word, I dont do pray and spray, but if there is a possibility that I can reduce risk to others I'll take it. That is why I switched from using 00 to #4.

Alls I'm saying (and I hope you all realize this too) is no matter how much I train, no matter how good I can shoot, when it comes down to it there is always the chance of messing up (we're human). And if you think you're not gonna mess up because you logged # of hours and did these training courses and techniques, thats shootin dangerous

Sounds like overpenetration was your main concern.

And based on your original post, I would say that it should be the LEAST of your concerns when choosing a home defense round.

Weigh it all out, and then find your comfortable balance.

The whole point of frangible ammo is reduced risk of collateral damage, that is why the post was leaning towards the over-pen issue.

Frangible will probably penetrate less but remember that anything that penetrates less into your walls penetrates less into bad guys. Honestly there's not enough information out there on frangible shotgun ammo for me to decide. I do know that the smallest buckshot feasible for self defense will penetrate several layers of material. However the risk of over penetration is minimal on up to some of the largest buck shot sizes. Putting these two things into consideration you should pick the heftiest load that won't overpenetrate. I put my faith in 00 buck. In a really cramped place a #4 would be fine. But in wide hallways #4 means more projectiles, which means you have more to be accountable for.

I can't think of any cartridge I'd trust my life to that won't penetrate a wall or two. Even a .22 could go through a door or two, albeit not in a very straight line.

There's no way around it. You've got to hit what you're aiming at. That means practice, practice, practice.

And remember, the only time you're supposed to be squeezing the trigger is when your life depends on it. If you did your part, it means you had no choice, and in such cases in which we act with little choice, there isn't a lot of room for regret.

I'm too tired to bust his chops on the "shottie", someone else please deal with this.

Not true. I used #4, 2 3/4" buck on a bad guy inside a house. It worked with one shot.
