    Suggestions 870

    Hey guys,

I bought a Remington 870 Wingmaster a few years back only to discover that all the internals were shotty. They wore down and what I have now is the stock, receiver, 28 inch blued barrel and the action slide.

Would you guys restore the gun? I don't know what else I could do with it but it's looking to cost more to buy parts than to just buy another 870.

    Thanks!

Brownells had the flex-tab conversion kit for around $80....covers a new bolt group.
Gunbroker had trigger assemblies for around $45.....
Those are the major parts, for around $120... the rest can't be that much more.

I vote to rebuild it. You will end up with a custom shotgun set up how you want it.

Thanks man. So if I get that flex tab conversion from Brownells, I wouldn't have to buy a new bolt? That'd be cool since factory bolts are almost 100 bucks! Anything else I'd need. Thanks for directing me to gunbroker too. I didn't realize I could pick up a trigger assembly for 50 bucks

Having received many 40+ year old Wingmasters to rebuild I have never seen a "wore out" one. If you decide to rebuild it I would think the person doing it should look at the parts and I would bet they are serviceable and could at best need a new spring or two.
And yes it could be FUBAR if someone got in there and tried to work on it and did not know what they were doing. Or, many years of neglect and abuse could have made some parts appear in bad shape. But warn out? I would be very surprised by that.

If you look at www.aiptactical.com and click on the refinishing page and look at the before and after pictures you will see to old 870 that were abuse beyond belief. Those went back to the owners with just a few parts changed out. Never give up on an 870 as it is the 1911 of shotguns.

I don't have the internal parts anymore. It's been years.

I'd second the above. The basic 870 design is like a Maytag appliance... you shouldn't ever need a repairman other than for some minor fixes. Get the gun properly serviced and enjoy it.

Since you don't have the internals you are going to spend more then just going and getting a new 870 Express. Which, would be the better option since the weapon would be new and have a two year warranty. Used parts could be fine but you won't know till you get them. New parts would cost almost as much as a new weapon.
