Sorry guys but Every Express ever built is a magnum receiver and it does not say "Magnum on the Reciever. The first ones simply had "Remington Express" on them as the word magun was being used since the "Remington 870 Magnum" was the Police version. They then started useing the word "Police" on the 870 Police models and this freed up the word Magnum and they started "Remington 870 Express Magnum" just words Words since they are the same receiver. Today they simply have "Remington 870" on them, still the same receiver since there is only on 870 12ga receiver. Every older Remington 12ga shotgun that has a serial number ending in the letter "M" is a Magnum receiver and every Express built from day one uptill 2mid 2009 has a serial number ending in the letter M. And every 12ga Remington shotgun being build today is a 3" magnum receiver except for the Super Magnum which is 3.5".
Since Remington was bought by Freedom Group along with a bunch of other companies, they have gone to a new serial number system. It begins with RS for Remington Shotgun and then has 5 numbers and ends in a series letter. They started with A and are now on B and will go to C when all the numbers are used up in the B series.
So after all the above, yes you can shoot 3" in any 870 Express shotgun as long as it has the original barrel which is chambered for 3" shells. I just want to correct the inaccurate information given about that the receiver had to say magnum on it. Check the barrel incase it was a used weapon bought in a pawm shop or auction site as these are notorious for having parts changed out on them.
for the guys that got this wrong, I am not picking on you, just correcting your error. Easy mistake to make unless you know the Remington shotgun line. Seems like when I correct people here on Calguns they get pissy so please understand the information I gave is correct and don't take it personal. The only two things I know and understand completely are Remington shotguns and K-9's. What I know very little about and don't understand is women and every thing else.Last edited by aippi; 12-16-2010, 5:45 PM.JD McGuire, Owner

I guess I was assuming that there were non-magnum 870 express receivers, since mine specifically says "magnum" on it.Sorry guys but Every Express ever built is a magnum receiver and it does not say "Magnum on the Reciever. Yep, it is confusing and these words are on there for marketing only. The ending letter in the serial number designates the receiver on all pre 2009 Remington shotguns. But gun makers realized that putting words like magnum on there sell guns. It was then the word Police or initials LE and today it is the word "Tactical".JD McGuire, Owner

While I understand what you're saying, "Police" and "Tactical" are slightly different for the main reason that there are Non-'Police' models of the various guns, and there are Non-'Tactical' versions.Yep, it is confusing and these words are on there for marketing only. Putting "Magnum" on the receiver is misleading, because it makes you think there are non-magnum versions of the same gun.
Oh well. Good to know, anyways.
I guess in saving costs, Remington manufactured all of their 870 express barrels (at least during certain years) barrels with 3.5" chambers, regardless of whether or not the receiver could cycle a 3.5" shell.

Is that a tac rail on your 870? I also have the 870 express magnum and been looking for something like that.
Can you link to a product page or something?

It's a Leupold scope base for Remington 700. I picked it up at Wal-Mart. I drilled and tapped the 870 receiver and put a cheap red-dot sight on it for turkey hunting. Even with the red-dot sight removed, the base doesn't interfere with the sight picture when shooting clays (or ducks or geese)
Here's the link you requested.
I just one one piece from the 2-piece set. Works pretty good. I'm sure there's a better approach to this, but I'm cheap, and like to tinker.Last edited by Chris M; 12-17-2010, 1:49 PM.Comment

Since I originally purchased my 870 Express for waterfowl & turkey hunting, I learned real quick that shooting 3" waterfowl loads through it with the factory recoil pad absolutely SUCKS. The first modification to my 870 was a Limbsaver pad. Best $25 I've spent.Comment
