i got it yesterday... the laoding mech threw me off. i was wondering why therer isnt a plate at the bottom where you slide the shells into the mag. how in the hell does that work? doesnt it make it easier for dirt to get into your gun? or did somebody screw up and im actually missing the piece?

moss 500 question

spelling man.
mossberg 500's don't have a remington 870 style "plate" that your thinking of. No one screwed up your gun is correct. I've took my shotgun hunting countless times and never got dirt in there so I think unless your throwing it in the mud you'll be fine

older 870 Wingmasters in 12 or 20 gauge in SoCal/IE -
That plate you're thinking of rides up along the bolt in battery, then scoops down to pick up the next round. I like it better, I am afraid those remingtons are going to come alive and bite my thumb off..
At least, I think I know what im talking about... but yeah, mossberg 500 is open on the bottom. I don't shoot remingtons, im just kind of a post hoor...Last edited by sevensix2x51; 12-10-2010, 8:52 AM.Comment

Goback did you read the owners manual? Operate the action with an gun empty and watch, it's fasinating. Action open...Shell Carrier (sometimes called elevator) is down to capture the round released from the magazine....close the action and Carrier rises to position the shell so the bolt can push it into the chamber. See manual for crying out loud they are online if you didn't get one with the gun.Larry Renner

the owners manual was not very helpful. it was more of a generic moss pump manual. it wasnt specific to the gun. i was just making sure there wasnt supposed to be a plate like in every other pump ive ever held or fired. this is the very first mossberg ive ever owned or even really seen up close. sorry my lazyness didnt pass your quality control.Goback did you read the owners manual? My Mossberg 500 (actually Coast-to-Coast Hardware branded) is 35+ years old. It was used and abused when I got it, having been a "loaner" gun for a duck club. It was covered in camo tape and mud, and I am guessing it had never been cleaned.
I have owned it for about 20 years, and it operates flawlessly despite the prior abuse - and that big "hole" in the bottom.

You just found one of the reasons I, and my fat thumbs, bought a 500 instead of an 870. I just could not see me not getting a thumb stuck in there at the most inopportune time. And yes the manual could be better, but the 500 is easy to take apart and put back together so don't worry about it.ARMADILLOS!!!Originally posted by IronchefSmall bands of ferocious animals would form and AK47's would be hoisted defiantly in the air with that all too heroic war-cry.....

Okay I'll conceed on the crummy manual point...but did you watch the action operate from the bottom? That should answer your question graphically. The disappearing carrier is one of the better attributes (no pinched thumbs during loaded) of the Mossberg, along with the tang mounted safety.Larry Renner

i did look at the action it was confusing because i couldt figure how the shell would stay in the magazine after i closed it. it seems like it would all pop out once the action is closed. im taking it tomorrow to the range so we shall see how everything works... i think i just need to play around with it some. how come the parkerized finish is so crummy on these new mossbergs. are the remingtons the same? ive already scratched mine trying to see if it will fit behind my couchOkay I'll conceed on the crummy manual point...but did you watch the action operate from the bottom? Thats why ithas a shell stop on one of te two bars. Believe me they dont pop outunder recoil, so your fine. it was designed and proved to work that way.i did look at the action it was confusing because i couldt figure how the shell would stay in the magazine after i closed it. it seems like it would all pop out once the action is closed. im taking it tomorrow to the range so we shall see how everything works... i think i just need to play around with it some. how come the parkerized finish is so crummy on these new mossbergs. are the remingtons the same? ive already scratched mine trying to see if it will fit behind my couch
After your range trip guarantee you'll feel confident in your 500.
