Looking at semi auto... 930 SPX?

I've been wanting to get a semi-auto 12g lately, and I've had my eye on the Mossberg 930 SPX. The cheapest I had found was around $645 + tax & DROS (and about that if I had it shipped and paid transfer fees). However, I just saw Turner's will be having it on their weekly special starting tomorrow for $599. IMO, I'd be willing to buy one at that price, and pick up a 930 Mark 5 pistol grip stock (extra $55... I'd like to have both so I can use for clays also).

I've seen some bad reviews with cycling issues, not breaking them in properly, or jamming. I was wondering what the overall consensus was on these shotguns. I know that lower recoil loads may not cycle through semi auto's in general. But are they still a really good & reliable shotgun to get? Any reasons why I should not get the 930 SPX?

Recently some people have been reporting issues with a couple of 930s on here, but overall people like them quite a bit (I know I liked the one I was able to shoot) and have had pretty good results with them.

And as far as break in its pretty easy, just get a hundred rounds or so of the cheapest target loads you can find and run them through you semi auto to work out the kinks.

The SPX barrel is an 18.5" cylinder barrel, not threaded for chokes. It is not optimized for clays.

I'm currently deciding which of the 930 combos I'm going to buy: Mossberg 85125, 85325, or 85238.

With the combos, you get two barrels, but you miss out on the goodies that come with the SPX: +3 tube extension, rail, and rear LPA sight. A Mossberg trap barrel (26 or 28" vent rib) goes for about $160-180 new, which might work for you if you decide to go with the SPX. Good luck.

They've had a pretty good track record, those who have posted issues on here is just a small fraction, and nothing too big to be needing urgency of concern. Plus Patrick Flanigan , the trick trap/clay shooter now uses a 930!

so go out and get that baby, and have fun with it!

Mossberg just had a press release the Jerry Miculek just signed with Mossberg to use their 930 in 3 gun competition. Rumor also has it they are going to build a 930 to compete with the Benelli, FN SLP and Rem 1100 Tac 4.
Jerry's shirt is going to look like a NASCAR racer. LOL! Going to get interesting. Mossberg is on the move.
Over at Brian Enos Forums in the 3 gun section there is a 6 pages of postings about
the 930. Benny Hill, who was the go to gunsmith for M2's in 3 gun, just got back from Ft. Benning 3 gun and ran his 930 with no problems.
That is a decent price. You can order barrels from Mossberg for about $160.00

I've also been looking at the 930, but have also been seeing some good stuff on the Rem 1100 tac. Any opinions on the 1100?

You have to keep the Remingtons CLEAN & OILED!.
I Have run a 1100 CM since 2003. Ran great for 3 years and then started having issuses.
Nothing serious, it would just not fully cycle at times. Drilled out ports, changed piston, reseal after each cleaning, new mag spring, went to a SureCycle recoil spring system,
Mobile 1 oil, new interceptor latch. Run only Win AA 3.25 dram loads for match ammo.
This has eliminated most issues. Now every once in a while 1 out of 50 shots carrier will not lift shell, and have to hit the button. I really love my Remington but shot a Salient Benelli and ordered one. Will keep the Remington for back up and I hope that Robby Johnson, former AMU shooting now shooting for Remington will get the bugs and problems worked out.

I bought 930 spx and it has been 100% reliable thus far with wallmart birdshot ,slugs and some TAP. I do need way more training with it so I would not have to stop and think. In a real life gun needing situation I don't have it all down from loading one round in the chamber first to unloading it. I really really like it though. I would of all ready bought a longer choked barrel if I could find one in stock. Good luck getting a 2nd barrel. One more thing is I wish the Mossberg web site was just a little bit faster. Perhaps a 1000 times faster would make looking around their amazing amount of different models a tad more fun.

Made in the U.S.A, low cost and reliable. Sold me.

Good shotgun for its price range. Remember that it's not a 1K FN SLP or 1.5K Benelli M2.
Still, you really can't find a decent semiauto in the 5 hundies anymore.
