Brand New 12ga - Now what?

Tonight, I pick up my shotgun from 10 day jail.
This is my first brand new weapon. I've always used someone else's gun.

I feel like a little kid on Christmas ...

Once I get her home, is there anything I need to do?
Someone told me to clear out the cosmoline (?).
What is that? How do I know if I cleared it?
Should I put some rounds through it first?
    Would that clear it?

Is there anything else I need to do to a brand spanking new out of the box 12ga?

    Thanks for your help.

Check it, clean it, lube it, take it out and shoot it.

    Don't go overboard with "accessories"

Before you buy anything aftermarket, do a search on these terms on google or your web browser of choice:

    "tacticool"
    "mallninja"

Keep it simple and have fun.

On a new retail shotgun there shouldn't be any cosmoline, that's really only found on millsurp weapons as far as I know.

There will be no cosmoline on a 12 gauge, like previously stated it will only be found on milatary surplus items such as ak's.So what did ya get? As long as it is brand new load it up and let er rip. Only time you will need to do anything to a modern firearm is if you buy it used from something like a pawn shop. Just to be safe you would want to take it apart to inspect and clean it to assure it is going to function ad that there are no obvious flaws or issues. have fun,I love me some shotguns!

Usually they put a type of packing grease in it so that it wont rust if it stays on the shelf for a long time.

Lube it up, get some ammo, go do some good ol shootin, break it down, and clean it up, Repeat this over and over till you break her in good! Also as everyone else suggested, just do your homework on parts, and what you want, to one their own i say, so just figure what you want. Just don't make it too over the top tacticool (or as my friends say, tactitool)

Clean it, lube it, and shoot it. I got mine on Thursday and shot 3 rounds of skeet with it. It is a Remington 870 Express and it ran flawlessly.

That's the attitude! She'll get over it!
If it takes her too long and you're not getting any nookie, give her $50 and tell her buy herself some new shoes!
                    Congrats and enjoy!

You need to buy another one, leave them alone in your safe, and they will multiply.

Your wife should be happy that married a sheepdog who is now well equipped to defend his family should the need ever arise, instead of some wussie who'd dial 911 and cower in the corner while the BG had his way.

You obviously haven't bought any Manolo Blahnik's or Jimmy Choo's lately.

                            Add another zero.

                              Maybe even invest in training.
