I've seen a lot of factory camo shotguns. Are they just for looks or do they have functionality when hunting?

Does Camo really do anything?

Why don't you just answer the question or not answer at all.Comment

Yes, depending on the type of hunting. It doesn't hurt to have it, but is it really "needed" for most hunting situations? No. The primary use is for turkey hunting, as they have VERY good eyesight and you are typically VERY close to them prior to the shot.Comment

I heard the word camouflage and this bit came to mind.

I think many animals are colorblind to red and orange, so the blaze vest is more noticeable to humans. Non-camo guns are more likely to have shiny spots (metal or wood finish), which are more noticable to animals.
Even so, there are many, many hunting guns that aren't camo, so with some exceptions (like turkeys), it may not make a big difference.sigpic

Most of the animals that can't see colors are pretty blind to stuff like "shiny," unless you get a flash off the metal as you move... In which case, you deserve a missed opportunity for choosing your spot so badly (shade = easy to hide in.) They don't notice you in your single color, - even if they can't see color, they can't notice the big patch that's all the same...
As above, depends on what you're trying to shoot. If it's got good eyes and can pick out colors, camo's a good thing. If it's something like deer... You could wear tin foil and be successful hunting deer.sigpicNRA MemberOriginally posted by Deadbolt"We're here to take your land for your safety"

Most animals are color blind and see in varying shades of grey. Most have extremely keen eyesight (I believe the antelope has eyesight 6X more powerful than humans). That said most big game animals are adapt at depicting objects which simple don't belong in the area by their contrasting shapes and reflection. Hence camo, and dull finished weapons. They make blaze orange camo which while very reflective to us color visioned humans is just a broken up shade of grey to most animals which hopefully will break up the hunters outline enough not to spook the game.I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.
As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.Comment

The camo gun is just another marketing ploy, like the toaster that only lasts a year.
Ya see, you put down your shotgun to have a sandwich or enjoy a smoke and "poof!" it's gone!
Then you have to buy another.
It doesn't matter what kind of super-unobtanium never wear out materials they made it out of or how long it was warranted to last - you have to buy a new one.
Keeps the market churning.
