Well, Remington probably figures they have been getting away with the really rough "Express" 870s for years now, so why not try it with aftermarket parts too!

No excuss for that mess. I am a volume Remington parts dealer and bought over $80K in parts last year and have seen some mess. Don't just let it go. Call Remington and complain. They log in each issue and they are reviewed. The more calls on an issue the faster the response. Take the solid steel extractor issue. I posted that on the gun blogs and they got enough calls to jump on it. The last 30 I got were perfect.

And for anyone wanting to jump in and do some Remington bashing, get ready for a fight 'cause there is not a manufacturer out there that does not let some things get by them. I sell hundreds of Remington barrels a year and see more issues then most anyone on this site as I am in this business. I can say for the volume the issues are minute but I call and give them hell about every one of them.

If it is a Remington manufactured barrel it is not an after market part. They are not trying anything. The issue is a human error and every step of the process is tracked. The employess who let this barrel get out of the plant will have to respond to it.

I have sold approximately 1,000 Remington barrels last year and have never seen one as discribed in this post. Have seen some other mess, like the front ramp canted, no bead pressed into front ramp, barrel ring missing detent ball and other stuff having to do with barrels like barrel shipped with not slide or rear sight. At best the issues I have seen are far less then .1% of the items I get from Illion considering the volume of parts I get.

So anyone taking one issue from a production line and trying to make it representive of a companies products is doing a disservice to that company. I would imagine that if I came to your place of work and found one thing that you did wrong and used that to describe you as a worker you would be very upset considering the thousands of things you did right and me focusing on the one mistake.

Remington

I have owned and shot Remington rifles and shotguns since I was a teen-ager.(I am now in my 60's)
I have never had a quality issue. I currently own an 870 express , an 1187 and a 742 semi-automatic rifle.Nothing wrong with any of them. To be fair, not one major gun company today, is as quality consicous as they used to be. Also, although the barrel may say Remington on it, it may have been manufactured by a sub contractor.
Not a valid excuse, but maybe a contributing factor.

Remington contracts stocks and a few small parts but all recievers and barrels are manufactured at Ilion. I know this for a fact as I have been there twice and toured the factory, all one million square feet of it. Each item is scanned in through the process ethier by serail number or tracking of other codes for barrels and other parts. An operator skipped a step in the process for this barrel and a QC person missed it. Both of them will be advised of their error when that barrel gets back to the factory.

Remember the issue with the PC coating bubbling and peeling off. All of that was traced to an operator on the night shift skipping a step in the coating process. This was not an error the QC people could see. The guy had other warnings and a record of other work issues. He is no longer a Remington Employee.

when I first went to the factory four years ago there were 787 employees. Down from 5,000 in the hey day of Remington. Of course much of the process is automated now. If you had less then 15 years at the plant you were still called the new guy. A few hundred have retired since then and there are now about 1,100 employees. This new work force is coming in as the "Old Guard" is stepping down. You are seeing it where you work also.

I believe these companies are just as quality consicous as always as poor qualtity affects the bottom line and returns cost money. I believe it is the some of the American workers who do care as much these days. I saw it in my career and see it now in my business. I have been lucky enough to get the right people and they have been with me for years. The average age of my work force is 53. Not meaning to offend younger people but being 57 years old I have seen the work ethic in this country change and not for the best. And yes, there are fine young people in our work force and hundreds of thousands have stepped up and are serving this country. This is not a dig on younger Americans. It is point that most anyone reading this can relate to in their jobs. I affects all the products we buy, not just firearms.
