What are the issues with using shot in a rifled barreled shotgun?

I would imagine with lead shot it would just foul the rifling
With steel shot, this I could see leading to a potential problem

How would lead shot foul the rifling? It never touches it......The wad/shot cup stays with the shot for 20' past the barrel

Old Painless looked into this, it's not effective for shot. Just use sabot slugs.

Nothing funnier than watching someone shot trap with a rifled barrel.

Less important but can be a pain: a lot of plastic from the wadding, cup, etc, ends up in the rifling and can be a pain to clean out...
