I go to TargetMasters in Milpitas. They only allow #8 birdshot but, those are the cheapest shells to shoot so I roll with it. I slide by the nearby Wal-Mart and pick up a $20 value pack and go nuts.

Richmond Rod and Gun go to the action bays. You can shoot slugs ,birdshot 00 buck. There is a steel plate you can shoot (BIRDSHOT ONLY)

NO SLUGS AT THE STEEL TARGETS

Make sure the weapons are in a case or a weapons lock is in place with muzzle's up. Checking in with the RO would be good to.

If you are shooting slugs (and maybe buckshot) you can go to the rifle and pistol range at Livermore. If you are shooting bird shot 7-1/2 and smaller you can shoot at the trap range. lprg.org
For birdshot there is also Martinez and United Sportsmen.

I called TargetMastersWest (408-263-7468) and they said that they allowed any size birdshot. Not just #8 birdshot but any size lead birdshot. No steel pellets, slugs or buckshot.

You can shoot your shotgun at Livermore's rifle/pistol range but you are restricted to SLUGS ONLY and you have to shoot at 50 yards or greater. You can also shoot trap and sometime sporting clays at the trap range. You can not shoot anything bigger than #7 1/2 and 1 1/8oz.

What is it, exactly, you are trying to teach him. That is going to dictate, in many respects, where you would want to go.

If it's familiarization and general blasting, Circle S west of Petaluma will let you shoot birdshot, buck or slugs on their pistol line. They usually have some pallets set up for shotgun patterning.

If it's trap then Richmond Rod & Gun (steel shot only), or Valley of the Moon Trap Club which has public shooting hours every Sunday morning.

If it is only slugs, than Chabot would be good. They also have a Trap/Clays range, but it costs $9 per round (25 clays-1 box of shells). Livermore has a nice shotgun/clays range: I do not know the cost (~$8). There is one near the Benicia/Martinez bridge to the east of 680: I do not know the cost, but it is a very nice range.

You should check the websites and see what they charge per round and what are their hours of operation.

USI aka United Sportsmen is a pretty good range.. lead shot allowed and they have trap, skeet, and 5 stand sporting clays.
