    Rail

I have a mossberg 500 security model. All it has is the front brass bead sight. I was thinking of putting the rail mossberg has on it's website on top of the receiver. I have a tasco red dot and rings set just sitting in my closet. What do you guys think? Or is this just a waste of money on mall ninja accessories?

I put on my gun thing's I'll use. I have a rail mounted on my SG, but never used it. Mount what you want then take a class where you're rolling all over the ground and sh*t. Whatever falls off, leave it there.

The only thing thats on my moss 590 is the original bead sight and a heat shield. Why would you need anything else but that? Its not like your gonna engage anyone pass 10 or 15 meters and in a home defense situation, i think its faster to lineup the perp with a front sight bead than a red dot. No lie though, a rail mounted red dot does look kinda damn cool.

Home Defense SG: Bead sight is just fine. If you must put a "rail" on the gun it should support a bright white LED light off the side, mounted between the barrel and the magazine tube.
You want a "game gun" or a "tacticool" gun for range conversation (CSF=cool stuff factor) then put a rail on it. 3 gun competition guns use dot sights all the time, but do you really want to have to turn your sights on before you fight? +1 on a bead sight for a purely home defense gun. No more needed than that. Provision for mounting a good quality light on an HD gun is a must.
