    question on pump action

How do you do a quick slug change on a basic pump shotgun. Basically what i thought was rack it back, loaded shell is extracted and pop in the slug, and rack forward. But how do you stop the next round from coming out of the magazine tube causing a double feed. This might be a completely wrong way to do it...im a noob. can anyone inform me on how to do a proper slug change?

Just load the slug in magazine tube before you rack the the slide. The spent shell will eject, and the slug you just loaded in the mag tube will be next up to bat.

      +1

What the OP described is what you'd do after the last round if you needed another in the chamber asap: rack back the slide, dump in a new shell through the side, and ram it home.

Or you can buy a Benelli SuperNova Tactical pump which has a shell interupter specifically designed to stop a round from feeding at th epush of a button so LE types can drop in a specialty round (slug or breecher round ect) through the ejection port as usual.

I have a Benelli SNT and I love it. The rotating locking bolt head (AR15 style) is really nice. I dont miss my Mossberg or Remington to be honest.

If your shotgun is fully loaded with a shell in the chamber, you can partially retract the foregrip* to a spot where you can remove the chambered shell, combat load your slug without releasing the next shell in the magazine tube onto the loading tray. On my Mossberg, it's about 3/8" - 1/2" from full retract. it takes a bit of practice but it can be done...

With the limited ammo capacity on most pump shotguns, down loading the mag tube just to facilitate a slug change doesn't make sense to me...YMMV

*while pressing the slide/bolt release button found on most pumps

for 870/hawk 982 assuming the chamber is loaded with an unspent shell and the mag tube is loaded

              1) place finger of left hand on where the receiver just meets the mag tube/barrel
              2) rack slide back until it reaches your left finger (shell in chamber should be coming out but not all the way out and a new shell from the mag tube should not be released yet)
              3) remove unspent shell
              4) place slug through ejection port
              5) lift up shell catch/carrier
              6) rack slide forward

with practice you can remove an unspent shell from the chamber and load a shotgun without losing any shells from your mag tube

When I used my Benelli SNT during a defensive shotgun course, I used the shell interupter for about half the day. The rest of the time I used the other method of loading a shell next in line. While the shell interupter feature worked well, it was a little bit more cumbersome to use and actually took a hair longer than loading a shell into into the mag tube.

If you have one of these features, train and practice with it a lot because it can be tricky to do at first when you're going full speed in a live drill (let alone in a HD situation with more stress added).
