    Traveling with shotgun

The wife and I will be spending time in a rental cabin up in the mountains in a couple of weeks, the cabin is fairly secluded so I'm thinking about bring my Reminton 870 along purely for safety reasons. My question is this, will having a shotgun at a rental cabin be illegal somehow? Obviously, during the drive up and back, it will not be loaded, it will have it's trigger lock on and store in a case.

A unrelated question, is it bad for the springs if I kept the shotgun loaded at all times? It's a Remmington 870 Express with a 8 shell tube.

Metal will not stress when left alone. It will only stress when it is constantly moved.

So to answer your question about keeping the weapon loaded, and the springs being damaged from being compressed...no. It will not damage the springs.

As for the rental cabin SOP, I am not sure. But if you are alone with your wifey...bring it.

Now if you are going to have "maid service"...well...that's a different story.

It is legal to have a loaded gun in a temporary domicile (motel, parked RV, campsite) so yes you can.

You do have to figure out a way to keep it secure while you are there.

btw trigger locks satisfy no law, locked cases do.

I was under the impression that because a shotgun is considered a long gun, you can transport it without any locks (on the gun, or case)? Unloaded definitely, but are any locks really necessary?

Long guns don't have to be in a locked case unless you're within 1000 ft. of a school zone. IIRC, Jess.
