Between those two, I'd go for the M4 (gas-operated.) There's also a rebate going on right now, not sure how much they go for these days. The form to print out appears right away:

Check out the Salient Arms Benelli. These are set up ready to run.
$2,000.00. Look at the Mossberg 930. Triangle Shooting Sports in Texas is also getting the 930 tricked out. About $1,350.00
Yes the FN SLP is a great choice. They were suppose to have the pistol grip model come out this fall.
If you can't shoot good, at least look good shooting

The M2 is more versatile but the M4 has the cool factor. If you get a Field model it will eat everything. The Defense models have heavier recoil springs since they're more likely to use slugs. The lighter bird shot or cheap shells might not cycle properly. The M2 has more barrel lengths so if you want to go from defense to hunting or skeet/trap, you can swap barrels. They are inertia driven not spring. The spring helps cycle the bolt. They run clean because of this. Cost wise, you'll probably save a couple hundred.

Keep in mind that you have to buy the Benelli from an Authorized reseller if you want the warranty. Benelli keeps a tight reign on prices so you won't see them listed very low.

3GunFunShooter is CORRECT!!!!!!!!!!! I just bought the "Salient Benelli" from Velocity Shooters. The gun is unbelievable. They start by lightening the bolt and polishing for less recoil, open up the loading port, upgraded the lifter for fast reloading, stippling the stock and fore-end, adding a magtube to accept 8 rounds in the magazine, trigger job, oversized bolt release, and more. This thing is ready to ROCK. There is not a better shotgun on the market now. You can view the gun at www.velocityshooters.com.

What will your primary use of this gun be?

Depending on what that is you can get more clear advise that will help you rationalize the price differences between both.
For starters, the M4 will be less weight sensitive. The Inertia drive Benelli can be sensitive to weight when you add lights, lasers, side saddle, etc...

                    What he said.

A 3-Gun gun is not a defense gun and vice versa.

Answers will flip-flop depending on your intended purpose.

A Salient Arms Benelli is a wonderful thing, but shouldn't necessarily be your primary home defense gun.

I finally after all these years picked up my first autoloader, and I chose a Benelli M4. Today was the first run of 60 rounds. I used Federal 00, Remington Slugs and tried some low recoil 00 buck which did not cycle the action. Overall I am very pleased with the firearm, impressed with the design and how it is put together and I look forward to running it some more.

My M2 field eats anything, $5 walmart bulk birdshot, federal low recoil buckshot/slugs, full power stuff, like a champion.
