Remington 887 or Benelli Nova for Hunting

    Hey guys,
I plan on buying a new shotgun for hunting. Will be used mostly for waterfowl, and occasionally for coyotes and turkey. Right now I have a Maverick 88 but want something chambered in 3.5 inch and with a smoother action. I have fondled both and they both felt and pointed well. The only things I like more about the nova are the position of the safety and the cosmetics. I want to know which gun will put up with my abuse better. Thanks for any help.

The Mossberg 835 may feel more like your Maverick 88 ergonomically if that is any value to you. I've never shot a nova but they look and feel nice. The only issue you can have with a nova is if you decide to sporterize one, you have to deal with 922r compliance since it is an import. I'm guessing you don't care, but just in case I thought I'd through that out.

I have not handled an 887, but I've used a nova for hunting and it is an excellent choice, smooth action and very simple to take down and clean.

I can't speak re the 887... but across the board Remington is dropping their quality control to crap. The Benelli Nova is the best made and best designed pump on the market.

You'd honestly be doing yourself a disservice to purchase a gun from Remington at this point.

For some reason I was thinking 870 super mag when I read 887. Yeah, I've heard nothing but garbage about the 887 even from die hard Remington guys. Everything from feeding issues to guns showing up brand new with rust under the plastic shell (you know the shell they infer makes it all but rust proof). If you gave me one, I'd sell it as fast as I could before it gets discontinued.

I won a brand new 887 Nitro at a Ducks Unlimited dinner last month. I did that very same thing when I found out about it's problems.

If it's between the Nova and an 887, I'll take the Nova every time. Way too much bad press out there on the 887 for it to be one or two bad units that happened to get past QC.

                      Not the 887 for anything.

Can't agree with the best pump being anthing but the 870 but there is enough of that mess in any this -v that thread so won't start one. I guess anything is OK for taking game but when my *** is on line I want an 870 in my hands.

Just understand the 887 is a dud and will not be around long.

Not anymore. I used to have a beauty, but it was made to much better standards than the current quality control.

25 years ago, if you held a Remington 870... you held a work of art.

I do have one of the new 870 clones. $169 NIB and by all appearances the inexpensive clone is made to higher standards of craftsmanship and materials than the original Remington it copies.

Benelli all the way. The 887 is generally a piece of crap. I've met a few people that were happy with theirs, but have met far more people who were unhappy. Rust under the finish, chamber and misfire issues, and an overall rattle/cheap feel compared to the nova etc.

My buddy's a distributor and never really gets complaints on any Benelli product. The only "POS" complaints he gets about Remington is their 887 line. Second place is how "crappy" the 870's are nowadays (but nothing honing won't fix)

If the Nova fits you well, I'd so go for it.

                              WTB used AK MFER.
