i'd go with the 870 also, unless going for Doubles Trap. The Mossbergs are OK, too, but I prefer the 870. An 870 will last for many, many years of use, and if you choose to go to something else for busting clays, it will serve for home defense or hunting or any other task a shotgun is good for. Parts availability is nearly unlimited for both repair and modification parts.

I say the 870 isn't a bad way to go. And when you find yourself really devoting your time to clays and you want something nicer turn it into a tactical/homedefense gun

Thanks for all the great advice! Looks like there are an awful lot of votes for a Remington 870 (which, IIRC, was what I used at Boy Scout camp as a kid), so I think it's time to shop around. Thanks again!

Another vote for 870. I'm some what of a noob to trap and skeet and I can't get enough of it. I bought the 870 and it has worked well for me in both venues. For a small investment it has provided me with a great amount od enjoyment. Perhaps someday I will invest in a nice hinge gun but for now 870 express is the ticket for me.
