Can I still hunt and shoot trap effectively with a Remington 870 18" HD?

      Winchester Model 12.
I can buy two 870s WGS for one mod #12.

Fjold Most on you list you would have a hard time finding parts for. If at all.
The 870 Wingmaster was just my Opinion to each his own.

Ahh, yes, thanks for pointing out the obvious. The original poster was asking for suggestions within his price range and the Remington 870 express fit the requirements.

The Winchester Model 12 IS solid as a rock. Feels great. Wish I'd seen it before my friend did! Well worth the price of $450 +/- but greater than $300 that Rugerman's looking for.

That said, I'm still happy with the 870express but still impartial to guns that are older than I am. My latest favorite, Rem 11-48 is semi and can be found for less than $300. The 870 is much lighter though.

Most of the guns on my list you would never need parts for. But parts are just an email or phone call away if necessary in the global economy and alot of these guns carry lifetime warranties.

Availability of parts is probably the least indicator of quality. If you can find alot of replacement parts for a shotgun it would imply that those parts are used alot. That would seem to be the indicator of the worst shotgun, not the best. But to each his own, I guess

              Fjold,
Yeah the 870s are just junk so dont buy one.
I have forty years experience with wingmasters all good.
MAYBE THAT"S WHY THE POLICE USE THEM FOR YEARS.

Not in the old days. They had a better budget and would buy Quality.
All Im saying is if you don't like 870s don't buy it.
If you want something that will last buy it.

Why do you have to get defensive? I did not say that the 870's are junk, you stated an opinion that the 870 Wingmaster was "the best shotgun for hunting and trap shooting" and I disagreed because there are hundreds of better shotguns out there for either purpose.

The 870 may be one of the better entry level shotgun for general use in it's price range but it is not the best at anything.

What does what the police use have to do with this? POLICE DON'T SHOOT TRAP OR GO HUNTING WITH THEIR ISSUE SHOTGUNS!

40 years of your experience with an 870 Wingmaster doesn't prove that they are the best gun for hunting and trap, it just proves that you have shot a single model of gun for a long time. How much better would you shoot trap with a wider field of experience and a dedicated, purpose built trap gun on the level with Perazzi, etc.?

Go to the Grand Nationals or any match above club level, how many 870 Wingmasters do you see the top handicapped unlimited shooters using? ZERO!

The 870 Wingmaster is not the best gun for trap, it is not even in the top 100 'best' guns used for trap.

                      Fjold,
Perazzi shotgun. Find them for $300.00 I will buy all you can find.
I don't think you can find ONE at that price $$$. His budget was in the around three hundred range.
I never said the 870 was the greatest shotgun. Nor did i say it's a great trap gun. You can use it for that if you want. You can use a single shot H&R if you want.
I did say 870 was versatile & can go from trap to field to Home defense with one nut and barrel change.
FYI i know they don't shoot 870 at the Grand.
Yes, i have hunted for forty years too.
He wanted advice i tried to send him the right way IMHO.
Fjold maybe you can find him a $300.00 dollar perazzi. He will have a great shotgun.
Good luck Rugerman on finding a shotgun.
I have said all im going to say on this.
