Hey shooters. What do you guys think about bead sights? The Remington 870 Express Magnum 18" I want to buy comes with them. The dealer told me that I would have to spend some serious cash to put rifle sights/ghost rings on them. I'm not used to the idea of not having rear sights, but I guess shotguns are an exception. Thank for your help with my other threads also.

Bead sights
If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

I think it comes down to distance, loads and speed. A simple bead sight is for fast moving targets using spread patterns -- think birds or clays. The rifle sights let you use slugs at distances that small bird loads hit dirt (my range back home you literally shoot at clays directly toward the rifle/pistol lines a couple hundred yards away).
Basically you get a better, more accurate sight picture with rifle sights, and can compensate for distance easier, but they obscure your view for moving objects. When you're using the bead you line up the bead with the ridge of the shotgun and make sure you keep everything parallel in your motion. It's actually a good exercise to practice this, in general -- seeing that you don't misalign your sights with motion.Last edited by aplinker; 05-24-2007, 5:42 AM.

If your Remington has a vent rib there are companies that make sight sets that clamp right on the rib. No drilling or tapping required. Others have sights that you can drill and tap holes in the rib to mount.

Everything I've read about those has been bad
They don't seem to stay put real well. Most everyone says they move around when shooting, so the sight never hold a zero....Last edited by Baron; 05-25-2007, 10:22 AM..

Nothing wrong with a bead. If you mount the gun properly you can use the slight concavity in the top of the receiver to align the shotgun. It actually works quite well. That said, one of my 870s does have an MMC ghost ring sight setup on it and it does make it easier to shoot slugs. With buckshot at close range it will be a wash.Comment
