Not necessary although I believe the first press on a reloader that kicks out the spent primer also sort of resizes the hull and straightens out the opening crimps. Most hulls won't expand much if any on the first time. Early AA and STS hulls can be reloaded numerous times before they start to deteriorate. Usually the crimp edges go well before any hull fatigue.Originally posted by fullrearviewI would by a prius and put a diesel engine in and tune it so black soot would just bellow out the back, and stop all traffic behind me while I drive through BerkleyComment

Yes. The base does expand.
It depends on the type of reloader you are using as to where the resizing is done. I'm familiar with some of the MECs. If you have a 600Jr you will resize on the first station, shaving the brass. If you have a 650 you resize as a separate operation. The fastest way I have found is to resize using a Supersizer (collet resizer) in a separate operation - it also gives a better sizing than what is found on the 600 because the base is actually formed rather than shaving the brass. I think the Grabber and 9000 resize in the first station with a collet type of resizer.Jack

shotshell resizing
To save cost on reloading equipment for one and time for another. I have just the one single shot shotgun. The shotshell is not going to expand no larger than what the chamber is. As long as the shotshell loads up OK, resizing is not necessary, or is it?For sale or trade:

If you are not using a mag fed gun, I don't think it's necessary. But, I normally load on a 600 jrs. So, they resize when I decap. I did start loading shotshells on a Lee Loadall JR though. That is not the Lee shotshell press that everyone is familar with. It is a little press that came with adjustable shot SCOOP and powder scoop. If you want to load without investing much money into equipment, this press is it. It'll let you load about a box an hour.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

IF your empties are from factory once-fired from YOUR shottie and not fired in another shottie, you are probably good to go.
IF however, you pick up range hulls or someone gives some to you, you will most likely need to resize.
Not all chambers are the same and when expansion occurs in one shottie, it just may not work in another.
A friend of mine did this very thing with about 500 - 410 reloads for a tourney. Not one would fit in his shottie because they were all range pick ups and not resized.
Lesson learned!Comment
