    LAPD Bright Green Shotgun stock

I was watching a program on TV which featured LAPD in a low speed pursuit arresting two female motorists who failed to stop and continued to ram the police cars in Hollywood.

The LAPD approached the stopped car with guns drawn. You can clearly see one LEO was aiming a pump shotgun with a bright green synthetic stock and sling.

I was curious to know whether the green stock and sling meant the shotgun served a special function, or was it just dressed up to that LEO's own sense of fashion.

I think the green stoked ones are meant to solely fire less than lethal ammo like beanbags and such. I'm sure an LAPD member can chime in and tell us more.

      Most likely the case.

The local po po where I'm at has bright orange stocks on their "bean bag only" shotguns.

I'm sure that's LAPD's "Less than Lethal" shotgun that's loaded with the Super Sock rounds. Kinda like a baton to reach out and touch someone.

Other Departments will use the same pump action shotgun with a "blaze orange" stock and fore grip.

Could be urban myth type crap but my neighbor here at work said he saw a piece on the news last year about an LAPD deal where they had a guy pulled over in a truck who was not complying and the officer shot him with what he thought was the less than lethal gun!! You got it, buckshot at less than 20 feet away. That is where I first heard of the "green gun" policy. Word was the guy was very compliant after that, as he slowly acheived room temp.

I dunno about green, but orange is less lethal. Any LAPD guys out there that can confirm?

I recently attended a function at the LAPD Academy and got to see a SWAT display and talk to the SWAT officer about the green shotguns and he said they were color coded for "less than lethal".

I didn't see any orange ones there, so I don't know if they use them or not nor what they would be loaded with??

usually bean bags or rubber slugs. Speedfeed makes the orange LE stocks.

could it be a color blind stock... i know that some fire trucks were lime green because its more visible to see and i think that red / lets say an orange stock may look brown toa color blind person.

My best friend is color blind and i can tell you that he does not differntiate colors worth a crap.

Just a theory.. I could be wrong.

Thanks guys. I suspected it may have been a special purpose shotgun of sorts.

So do LAPD use the bean-bag less-than-lethal round in a 12Ga? I have seen the less-than-lethal rounds with the Zytel balls inside, and wondered if any LE depts used those. I thought I may get some to use as a home defence round.

Home defense is not a time to be playing with rubber balls.

Green stocks and foregrips are used on the less lethal supersock or "bean bag" round 870s. It also lets other officers know what you're pointing. You also advise other officers prior to firing it.

The orange stocks are for INERT shotguns, that are neutered and cannot fire anything. Used primarily for scenario training.

The "urban myth" is actually true. A Redondo Beach copper shot a guy with a 12ga, that he thought was his less lethal at the termination of a pursuit. Tragic mistake.

                          Hope that helps.

True, it varies by dept. But here on LAPD, they are as stated above.
