^^ Those reduced FC wads from Hornady / Federal group wonderfully tight patterns, you're looking at about a fist sized pattern at ~7 yards with an cylinder choke. Exactly what I want, perhaps too tight for some. Recoil is easily manageable, comparable to wally world birdshot.

Osokne: when she shoots can you ask her what she thought? Went to big 5 to look at shotguns and buy some new shoes and gym stuff, and firstly I like the feel of a SG with the smaller kids stock. lol. Im small
second store guy said the rounds I have are ganna hurt my shoulder when I fire them so to install a pad on the SG afterwards?
General Q: I saw at walmart the 100 count box of game rounds? Are those good or ok to practice with? Could I use those on rodents and snakes too?
Cleaning: How do you guys clean your Shotguns? Mount lights? Or extra munitons? Are the slings from say Cheaper than dirt any good?Comment

What seems like would be perfect for you would be a youth sized 20ga with the correct load and possibly some sort of recoil reduction if needed
I have found the 100rd bulk packs to be good cheap fun
rodents, snakes, and clay pigeons excellent targets for that load, 2 legged threats not so much
cleaning oils and solvents
remove build up and lightly oil
cleaning techniques, each person has there own
extra ammo is typically kept in a couple different options either mounted flush with the receiver or on the stock
most carriers are designed for 12ga
Which sling do you have in mind?"Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." James Madison

Also is it ok to leave SG loaded in safe? I was told leaving magazines for glock loaded is ok, but is that the same for SG?

this gun will be your home defense gun correct?
Any kids at the residence?
Why the need to have the shotgun in the safe?
I leave my shotgun right next to my bed, with shells only in the magazine and none in the chamber
I would say yes it would be ok to leave it loaded, maybe periodically cycle the action to make sure the magazine spring is still working correctly and pushing the shells towards the receiverLast edited by WDE91; 09-30-2010, 5:19 PM."Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." Loaded in a safe is fine… More important than worrying about if it’s OK with the gun is making sure you are well versed with gun safety and have good trigger discipline.
Leaving a gun loaded is more of a safety thing than anything else. If you practice gun safety, then I should see no problem. Every time I pick up a firearm I check to make sure it does NOT have a round in the chamber, even if I already know it’s not loaded. I always keep my finger off the trigger, because I assume as all times it’s loaded, even when it’s not loaded.
+1 on what Bjkearns said…
I do cycle the action once in a while, and more important, I shoot it at the range. I like to function check my HD guns as often as I can afford to. For both assurance and practice.ExtremeXComment

Ya if you do decide that leaving it loaded works best for you, you will need to have perfect trigger control any mistakes could be deadly
I thought about one of those shell carrying slings but then came to the realize it would be incredibly heavy, figure each shell weigh 1.25oz, which will give you a total of 25oz, which over 1.5lbs swinging below the gun
If that sling is something you want to try, I say go for it, you may find it to be what you like
Also I agree practice and training is everything"Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." James Madison

Will do, she says "no prob!" Just have to sort out the deal with the patterning board at the USI range. One RO told me any shot size was fine, just not steel shot or slugs... Another told me it was lead birdshot only. So, it may be a while!Osokne: when she shoots can you ask her what she thought? The shorter stock is giving you a difference in what's called "Length of Pull". This is the distance from the trigger, to the shoulder face of the buttstock. A standard full-sized (if you will) "LOP" can be uncomfortable for people with shorter arms. It's a farther reach for you and past your "comfort" point of balance. That's why the shorter stock feels better to you. There are a lot of aftermarket stocks available for the 500 series Mossberg. Shorter, pistol grip, folding, adjustable... the list goes on.
Recoil pads... The brand most folks use (or at least talk about) is Limbsaver.
They have a wide variety of products available. I'd wait to pick your pad, until you pick your stock (if you're getting aftermarket). Remember that the pad will add to your LOP, so bear that in mind.
Using the factory stock pad, on my Persuader, still bruised me up pretty good when shooting the higher velocity ammo. I'm guessing that what you were given, is probably north of 1300 FPS and kicks like the proverbial mule."Improvise, Adapt and Overcome"Comment

You can leave the mag tube loaded, yes. About once a month you should take the rounds out and check them to make sure they are getting compressed or deformed. Replace any that look out of shape. Generally speaking the ammo will go bad before the magazine spring.
I have a once a month routine with my HD shotgun that involves unloading, checking the ammo, bore and action as I used to do daily with the SG in police cars. Once satisfied that it's all good, reload and restore to the ready place.

Loaded in safe is fine. Cops keep theirs loaded and locked in the cruisers, and it seems to work for them.
Keep something easy to get to in a hurry though. You have a Glock? keep either that or the SG available and not locked up in the safe. There are different ways to do this if you have kids around.Comment

The 20ga 500 or the 870 is a great gun for someone small of stature.I'm a big guy and I prefer a 20 over a 12 because it allows me to make faster follow up shots on target. The 20 has enough force to takeout the bad guy loaded with #2 0r 3 buck. The 410 is not a good HD shotgun leave it for breaking clays if you want a chalenge.Check out the websight below it has some good info on HD ammo and weapon choices.

Just gain 50 lbs and you will have more HD SG options...
I bought the PG Moss 500 with the 7+1 capability. Changed out the stock with a Knoxx and its GTG.
Try and find a range that will let you try a few out. No sense in spending $$ until you've shot few....Last edited by DannyInSoCal; 10-01-2010, 8:45 AM..
