    Length on remmy 870 barrels

I'm trying to scavange up a barrel for my 870 of spooky doom and I have a question.

if you take a barrel and measure the overall length, how much longer is it than the distance from the boltface to the muzzle?

I found a barrel that might be perfect for my needs, but the seller doesn't know how to measure from the boltface. so I put the question to you guys

if the overall length from tip to tail on the 870 barrel is 21 and 1/4 inches, then what is the distance from the muzzle to the boltface.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

That's a good question that I don't have the materials (or Rem870) to answer for you. Did you suggest to the seller than he drop a dowel down the bbl with the bolt closed and then measure the length of the dowel? That is the DOJ/ATFs official hardcore high-tech method of measurement. I'd think it's less than half an inch difference, but couldn't say for sure. If no dowel, a string with a weight on the end would suffice, and just mark and measure the string.

The thing is the guy is a total non-gunnie, all he's got is the barrel, he doesn't even know its for an 870 which is why its cheap.

he gave me the overall length but I need a specific length so that my factory bayonette extension will look right.

Ahh. Well, I don't own an 870, but I've got a Norinco 97, which is almost an exact copy. Give me a few minutes to find some string or a stick or something and I'll do my best to get a measurement for you. If that's not good enough I can go by work tomorrow and measure an 870 for you, but then I'd have to shoot for a bit, and you'd owe me money for ammo.

I thought the norinco 97 was a copy of the winchester 1897? but thanks for doing the legwork on this one.

Barrel length to bolt face= 18.5"
Barrel length to end of bore (overall barrel length less partial male extension that meets inside of receiver) = 18.5"
Barrel length to outside of receiver = 18"
Total barrel length (including receiver extension thingie) = 19.75"

You'll have to ask him what he was measuring to? The usable barrel length on mine is 18.5" but if he's including the extension (not sure what else to call it) that only extends from 1/3 of the barrel into the receiver, that's probably adding circa~ 1.25" to the length. That extension is the one piece that I believe may vary between my Norinco and an 870 though, I remember reading the Norinco was an exact copy with the exception of the barrel connection.

Based on all that I'd say he's got a 19.5" barrel? Hopefully that's of some use to you. Best I can do from home, sorry.

And you're right, I was thinking of someone else's shotgun being a 97, mine is a Norinco 98, and is an 870 clone. I'd have bought an 870 but I came into this cheap & used from a coworker and it's a sweet shooter, came w/ sidesaddle & ghost rings.
