Tactical shotgun range

Anywhere to shoot targets with an HD shotgun in Sacramento. Not clays strictly paper targets or steel targets.

Well, there are a few ways to do this in Sacramento. You could go out to the Spenceville range up by Beale AFB (cheapest), become a member at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center & use the action pistol ranges (easiest) or take one of the shotgun classes put on by several companies like Tactical Response, LMS Defense, Stone Cobra Tactical, etc (most expensive but most educational). Of course, there's 3 gun matches...

At Sac Valley, as arfan66 stated join the Folsom Shooting Club. Take the course to use the action bays and supply your own steel targets and stands. Unless you become a member of the USPSA, or IDPA club, become a safety officer to use the clubs steel. There are also 3 gun matches at the range put on by IDPA and USPSA clubs. We use to have a shotgun side match after the IDPA club shoot but since the club has had 85-100 shooters we just don't seem to have the time after the regular pistol match.

Another option is just going to BLM land/national forest and setting up whatever targets you wanted to shoot. No club to join, no matches to participate in, and you can do it on your schedule.

USI in Concord has a patterning board. Restricted to use by members only. (Members of one of the 5 clubs). AND your gun must be LEGAL in the PRK.

No steel shot or slugs are allowed. Here's where it gets funky... I've heard a couple of conflicting things regarding shot size.

I've been told the following:
A) Any size shot is fine
B) Birdshot only (no buckshot)

I'm pretty sure that the no steel shot & no slugs rule is correct. I'll keep digging until I find the truth.

The board is covered with a piece of plywood. This must be unlocked and removed. The patterning board surface itself, is covered in grease. There is a roller there that is used to "smooth out" the grease. The shooter fires at the board and the shot pattern can be seen as a bunch of little holes, in the grease.

yes you can shoot targets if you go thru a lot of requirements. Join Folsom Shooting Club.150.00, take their class to use the action pistol ranges, make your own targets,
or joing USPSA or IDPA $35 per year, take the safety officer classs $10-50 and use their steel targets.

You should really give shooting clay with an HD shotgun a try. You'll need to limit the range by using either a small portable launcher or a hand thrower, but learning to get on a fast moving target and take the shot is really good experience.
