get the 870. The 887 has not reviewed well and I predict it will not be around long. It was a response to Market share by another Manufacture as is proving to be a dud.

The 870 has been here 60 years and there are over 10,000,000 out there.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

I was considering getting the 887 to add to my little harem. The reviews raped the gun. Normally I say I wanna find out for myself, but everyone has been saying the same thing. Stick with the 870. I inherited mine and my grandfather put his through the test during his day. I certainly have put some miles on it myself. It eats whatever I feed it, and hasn't complained once.

I have an 870 that I shoot every weekend, trap and skeet. I got it used so I'm really not certain how old it is but I think it must be less than 2 years old and I'm sure I have shot at least 1k down the pipe. I had problems in the begining with failure to extract. Common problem with a new 870. Fixed that with a little advice from Calgunners. (buff the crap out of the chamber). The newer 870's with the wood stock leave a little to be desired in appearance. The matte finish will rust in a short time if not oiled and the worst part is that the trigger guard is plastic. The older 870's are much better In my mind.
We will do as we will do because I am me and you are you.

Apparently the polymer one is stronger than the metal one. The new 870s aren't as bad as everyone says they are, they just take a little elbow grease. To be honest I havent had great luck with any shotgun. The mossberg 930spx has let me down, but I just polished the chamber, so if that doesnt work it will have officially let me down. But I do like my 870 it just needs a little more work.

The polymer trigger plate assembly on the Express and all the 870 Tactical Models is more durable then the cast aluminum. On my web site on the build your weapon page, about half way down is a video of a drop test Ruger did on the cast aluminum and the polymer trigger guards they switched to. It proves this point.

I use the polymer trigger plate assemblies in all my personal 870's yet I can have the Cast metal as I have dozens of factory new ones out in the shop and my cost is the same on either one. So, I use the best one and that is the polymer.

can't go wrong with an 870
big-5 sells a "security" model that is a 7-shot, 18.5" with synthetic hardware

don't store it in a cheap plastic case and it will never rust (none of the 4 I own have any rust anywhere on them)
don't shoot cheap paper winchester ammo and it will never jam (this problem isn't unique to 870 express, it's everywhere)
don't worry about "plastic" parts... I have never seen one break, although I have seen cast one bent, and chipped

you don't rise to the occasion,
you just fall back on your level of training.
